Forums - General - You know you're a spammer when...

when you create a thread not even remotely about video games. Oh and the constant threads from THE 1 about why he doesn't agree with christianity or any other religion

Your first sentence would imply that I am one of the biggest spammers on the site since I am about to end my long running review series on every James Bond movie ever made.  I never counted but I'm sure that each is several thousand words long.  That's an awful lot of spam.

About THE 1's threads, I don't agree with a lot of what the young man says, but I respect his opinion and think that the threads add some quality discussion.  Hasn't everybody in the world wondered where they came from?  I know that I have.  No smart assed comments about the birds and the bees...

I would just like to say that when members spam that it doesn't do anyone any good. When I say spam, I mean type up things that doesn't add anything to the conversation. I think that Jay hit the nail on the head earlier when he said that someone that goes into a thread and says something like, "I don't know anything about it, but heard that it's cool," that it doesn't add anything and is spam. If you have nothing to add (nothing that shows your experiences or intelligence on the subject or even a quip), then just stay out of the thread. Typing up nothing adds nothing and just makes the site look bad.

Is reaching a massive post count at a high rate really that important? Is it really that important to be "known" or whatever the goal is that you're trying to achieve? Is it?

I would like to end this by saying that not all people that post a lot are spammers, but many of you are and you know who you are. Please stop making the site look bad.

There are only 3 spammers on this site, which is good compared to some other forums where there are at least 10 prominent spammers. Anyway, I pretty much agree with Jay520's definition, but what really annoys me is when 2 spammers have a really long quote tree about meaningless bullshit that crucifies a thread. Also, I remember seeing a particular spammer have 15/25 posts on a page...You know who you are...

Small talk IRL is something like "Hey, did you catch the Giants game last week?"

Not...

"The person above me is a doo doo head lulz."

now you're just being a dick. We get it, you don't like those threads

I'm surprised no one has answered my question. And that was one of my several pretty good posts!

The length of a post doesn't determine if its spam. It's the substance of the post. Its okay to make spam posts sometimes. The problem is when you overwhelm the community with spam.

Here's a re-skinned example of spam from today: Entering a thread that titled "can you guys help me with XYZ?" and posting "I dont know or care anything about XYZ, but I hear its cool" or something like that.

I wasn't talking about the length of the post Jay.

I feel like the last one could go either way. If you took out the bolded I feel like it would be a perfectly fine post. It should spur some discussion.

I'd have to strongly disagree.

Scenario: You're in a mall crowded with people. Someone falls over and isn't breathing. Person yells out "Does anyone know CPR here?" Do you respond "No, but if I did, I'd be saving that guys life" or do you let someone who knows CPR help them without saying anything?

I know that's an extreme example, but it is somewhat similar. Essentially, it's unnecessary and wasting their time.

Things like responding by quoting an earlier comment but adding no original text, simply to 'highlight' it or to emphasize that you agree with it.

When you post in a topic you have no idea about.

Alternatively, if your name involves "Spurg", "Pez" or "Pie" :P

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Hi.

No troll is too much for me to handle. I rehabilitate trolls, I train people. I am the Troll Whisperer.

Maybe not "spamming" but nothing irks me more than when I see somebody posting several times in a row in their own thread in a desperate attempt to make the thread a success. If over 50% of the posts in your own thread come from you, or if you post five times in a row in your own thread, just let it go.

Spammer is someone who repeatidly makes the same exact post or goes through every thread making the same exact post.

People replying to every thread is not spam, like other posters have hinted. Everyone is allowed to express their opinion, wich is why this is an opinion forum.
