Spam is fairly straightforward. A spam thread is one which inspires pointless discussion, where no-one is really presenting original thought or insight, talking for the sake of talking, filling space to just fill space. It is not a joke, an observation, news, a forum, or a debate.

Does small talk = spam in RL? I guess you could say that

lol there is no such thing as real life spam

I think that is what he's trying to make a point of.

Small talk IRL is something like "Hey, did you catch the Giants game last week?"

Not...

"The person above me is a doo doo head lulz."

I'm surprised no one has answered my question. And that was one of my several pretty good posts!

That wouldn't make much sense because Mr Kham didnt mention real life to begin with. Probably because real life trends are not equal to internet trends. As evidenced by the fact that real life has no spam. While the internet obviously does have spam.

I didn't understand what he was trying to get a much either. I was just prodding at the fact that that is what he is trying to say.

Dude, you're trying to hard. Real life has spam, people saying thist they don't need to say. It's just less doofus, but it's still spam.

"Say what you need to say", heard that line before?

Anyways, enough with you.

Pie:

That's a little harsh Trucks. You can post 10'000 times in a year and still have some great posts and discussion.

True that Pie. As long as those who post regularly spur discussion there should be no probs with it.

The length of a post doesn't determine if its spam. It's the substance of the post. Its okay to make spam posts sometimes. The problem is when you overwhelm the community with spam.

Here's a re-skinned example of spam from today: Entering a thread that titled "can you guys help me with XYZ?" and posting "I dont know or care anything about XYZ, but I hear its cool" or something like that.

Wrong. If we assume Small talk = Spam and small talk keeps the conversation going we can also assume spam keeps the conversation going OR to put it more bluntly: Spam is good for the community

Like I said, RL life conversations and Internet conversations are too different to compare. Whats ABC on the internet may be XYZ in real life. And Im not sure what you mean by spam keeping the conversation going. If you want to keep the conversation going, you dont have to spam

I explained it. It's all a formula.

Small talk = Spam and Small talk = keeps the conversation going

Spam = keeps the conversation going

Q.E.D.

The thing with spam is it doesn't try to engage conversation. That's why its called spam. The moment a post tries to engage a discussion, its not spam.
