Forums - General - You know you're a spammer when...

I would really like to ask something:

Why do some of you guys seriously have such a problem with spam and such? I'm sure all of you have done it before. (Actually I know you've all done it before.) Many big members on this site post 3-8 word posts yet never get labeled a spammer. I personally have no problem with them doing that, what I have a problem with is when they go and call other people spammers or just say they don't like spamming yet technically they do it to.

It makes no sense to me. And I'm not trying to be mean, I just feel like it needed to be said.

I'm pretty sure everyone has made posts with little to no content and that's perfectly fine but some people make a habit of it like they're afraid that if they don't post in every thread they can find that the community will somehow forget about them.

Spam is fairly straightforward. A spam thread is one which inspires pointless discussion, where no-one is really presenting original thought or insight, talking for the sake of talking, filling space to just fill space. It is not a joke, an observation, news, a forum, or a debate.

Does small talk = spam in RL? I guess you could say that

Yes, but small talk is well-suited for an environment where speech is quick and easy. Talking, and webchat and such, but forums are different. You don't create a topic just to ask Jay520 "how are things?"

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

hmm don't know what is all spam but as example spam is if someone posts in a thread only to increase the post count and is not really interested in the topic or just to know other people see the name often enough to get known in a forum or that people don't forget him/her

spam is what this "girl" is regularly posting on all of our walls with email and so on

spam is when someone is posting in a thread but never reacts if you quote him and ask him something. zanewanes posts as example are often spam for me. if you quote him and ask him something you will get only an answer if you are lucky.

spam is when you open a thread which isn't informative and you are not interested in what people say in that thread. as example you can open a thread like "veggies, explain why don't you eat meat?" i think you would get some replies and discussions in that thread but you should really be interested in that and not only opening the thread to get vgchartz points and in reality you don't even care what their answers will be...but you can open a thread you are not interested in if it is really informative like "playstation 4 revealed". i think this wouldn't be spam even if you wouldn't care.

I love glorious Spam. Not really any canned meat is bad but the recent Spam adds are pretty funny.

I'm surprised no one has answered my question. And that was one of my several pretty good posts!

The length of a post doesn't determine if its spam. It's the substance of the post. Its okay to make spam posts sometimes. The problem is when you overwhelm the community with spam.

Here's a re-skinned example of spam from today: Entering a thread that titled "can you guys help me with XYZ?" and posting "I dont know or care anything about XYZ, but I hear its cool" or something like that.

I wasn't talking about the length of the post Jay.

I feel like the last one could go either way. If you took out the bolded I feel like it would be a perfectly fine post. It should spur some discussion.

(Thank God someone answered this. >_>)

I feel like you are right. But, with what you said, I would then not be considered a spammer. (Which a ton of people would probably dis-agree with. ) I really don't go into every thread and post. I might pop in to check it out but then leave because I have nothing really to say on the matter.

When you put this on random threads:

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

when you create a thread not even remotely about video games. Oh and the constant threads from THE 1 about why he doesn't agree with christianity or any other religion

How exactly are my threads spam threads?

it was a joke calm down all good fun.

Things like responding by quoting an earlier comment but adding no original text, simply to 'highlight' it or to emphasize that you agree with it.

Leaving flame-bait statements and never responding to any of the replies.

Deliberately pretending not to understand a topic, or attempting to draw out conversation in an effort to increase your post count (which can be painfully obvious).

Posting over 10 times in a thread with less than 40 replies. I mean, it's almost like having a conversation with yourself.

Leaving very short replies, in the region of two words. If it's a joke, sure that's fine. Or occasionally doing it is fine too, but frequently doing it = spam.

Many of the bigger threads on this site are full of spam, like the game threads such as say something about poster X above, or tell a story. Some actually contribute to the thread, and I see no problem with such threads, but if you browse through them, there's hundreds of replies from the same users, who spent mere seconds writing the first thing that pops into their head to increase their post count.

I suppose not all the above count as spam, but it sure is annoying.

There seems to be a lot of threads about post counts and such arising lately...
