Better than being "stuck" in 1985 by being forced to hold the Wiimote sideways with it's clunky design and tiny D-pad and buttons just to be able to play classic 2D platformers properly. Or how about still being "stuck" in the late 70's/early 80's when it comes to PC gamers and their gaming setup that they're still ranting and raving about to this day? How come nobody every complains about PC gamers being proud for sticking with a control scheme that's more than 30 years old, but when it comes to console gamers we're not allowed to be proud of a certain controller configuration that, while more than a decade old now in its modern iteration (20 years if you go all the way back to the SNES pad), just so happens to work best for us? Face it... aside from games specifically designed around the motion controls like Wii Sports, the Wii remote was a step back for traditional games. The only traditional series that I felt was improved when playing with a Wiimote + nunchuk setup was Metroid Prime 3. All the other traditional games like Galaxy and Mario Kart were all better off with a dual-analog setup... and one of Nintendo's biggest games this gen, Brawl, didn't even utilize motion controls at all, instead relying on a controller setup from LAST GEN as the preferred option. How come none of the Ninty fans complained that Nintendo was stuck in the past when it came to Brawl? Hypocrites, much? |
Of course a game has to be specifically designed to work with wiimote+nunchuck, after all traditional games are specifically designed to work with a dual analog controllers. And no I've never said every game should force you to play with the wiimote (by the way I've never even mentioned the wiimote in this thread). You're using PC games as a paragon but actually the interface of PCs has evolved too, you don't play every PC game with mouse + keyboard, most frequently when you play sports games, finghting games or driving games or flight simulations you use a controller or a wheel or a cloche. In other words you can use the most fitting controller option depending on which game you're playing.
I don't think the wiimote is overall superior to a standard controller, it's just a better alternative, only for some kind of games. While the "average" hardcore gamer has discharged it as gimmick for casual games. I just hope the same won't happen with this new controller.
