Obviously a thread made by someone who has never played more than one Wii game. I enjoyed it more than the GC.

Sorry Spurge, gonna have to disagree with you there big time.  I enjoyed the hell out of GC and the two-dozen or so titles I picked up for it from launch until demise, and I still pop most of them in every once in awhile (can never get enough of F-Zero GX!)

The Wii, not so much.  I had a great first year with it (mid '07-mid '08) with quality titles like Prime 3, Galaxy, Brawl (even though I hated it) and MK Wii, then it was all downhill from there with only 1 or 2 games out per year that actually interested me, untill finally 2011 came and the system was pretty much dead to me.  My total library for the Wii is less than a dozen titles, which is by far the fewest of any Ninty console I own save for the handhelds.  And some of them barely even qualify as games (Wii Play and Wii Fit).

So yea, for all it's incredible sales success, overall the Wii was a huge disappointment for me in failing to live up to its potential and giving me the same level of satisfaction I enjoyed with every Nintendo console prior, and hopefully one day with the Wii U.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Not all all. Games wise (which is what matters) wii is easily the best console of this generation (IMO). I have several third party games and while I recognize some of them were great (Muramasa, MH3, NMH, TvsC...) I dont really feel bad for not getting some 3rd party games...
I know a lot people care about COD, GTA, AC and such but I just dont like those games at all, I mean I tried bioshock, deadspace, lost planet, fallout (steam) and while I agree they are probably good games I didnt really like them at all. I think everything comes down to your own taste. For me game wise, I have no complaints, I missed a good castelvania game, star fox or Fzero game but other than that I feel the wii is an amazing console with amazing games and a very successful one.

This entire generation has been failure imo.
The Wii has only failed in a different way, mainly because of the lacking 3rd party support, 1st party games were about as good as in the GC era.

Your individual points are hit and miss:  "Gamers that were never gamers" aren't just "old people", for example.

"But by the time Nintendo began to compete it was too late"  This is completely backwards.  Nintendo started strong and continued for the first 4 years.  2011 is when the Wii really became a unanimous disappointment, which is consequently when it started being outsold on a regualr basis.  So yeah, it has become a disappointment since the stellar holiday it enjoyed in 2010; not because it's a "gimmick", but because Nintendo abandoned it.

I agree that for a market leading console, the Wii is a bit of an enigma.  Obviously the system missed out on the vast majority of 3rd party hits and Nintendo really let it die a slow death.  But the system still amassed a very strong library with many great and unique games, and when you consider other things (such as the wonderful Virtual Console), I will certainly remember it as a great system.

I wouldn't say it's a dissapointment.. It brought in a plethora of new gamers with its inviting controller and a back-to-basics approach to gaming. It also innovated with new types of games like Wii Fit. And it's library is pretty solid, assuming you like Nintendo games. To me personally, it made gaming feel new again, a feeling I had not gotten since the first time I picked up an NES controller. So there is definitly something to be said for that.

Though I will say its lifespan was cut off unneccesarily short by third parties freezing it out with lack of support, in addition to Nintendo resting on their laurels and slacking on game development for their console in its later years, particularly when it comes to using motion control. So I wouldn't say dissapointment, but definitly some unrealized potential.

.Third party maybe, but first Party HELL NO!!!

Wii was far from the biggest dissapointment lol I can think of several off the top of my head that were far more dissapointing.

I don't think Nintendo is in the slightest dissapointed. They lead the Gen and even though they aren't outselling their competitors right now it really doesn't matter to them.

Let me ask, do you think Nintendo cares that they aren't leading right now? No they don't they made more in the 3 years they brutally dominated then Microsoft has in its entire console existence and Sony did with the PS3. Nintendo made a killing. All the first party software and cheap hardware brought in a mint for Nintendo.

Now as consumers the Win was very close in living up to GameCube though instead of Nintendo further expanding.its mature audience it went after pick up and play casuals.

Now some say third parties lack of support made Wii a dissapointment. Sorry but Nintendo fans have never enjoyed massive third party support. On NES and SNES Nintendo kept third parties in line with N64 and GCN third party support was far lower. Nintendo fans or anyone who knows Nintendo knows you buy a Nintendo console for the Nintendo games and the third party content is simply a bonus.

See I buy Nintendo consoles because Nintendo makes the absolute best games. I buy Microsoft because third parties really use the hardware well and Microsoft isn't half bad a publisher. Sony is my last choice because it has third party support but first party content simply doesn't appeal to me.

If I was Nintendo I would be proud of the fact people buy my consoles for my games and not the third party ones.

I'm glad for Nintendo's sake that the console sold so well, but I must say that I have never spent so little time and bought so few games for any of my consoles as I did with the Wii (yup, even surpassed by the original Xbox). The games were still great though, and I guess you could partly blame the greatness X360 offered.

Let's see if Wii U can bring them back to the top.

In terms of the games/genres I play it was disappointing. First-party games have been up to Nintendo's usual high standard but that's really not enough to keep me gaming through a console generation.

Third-party support has been mainly focussed on party games that sell well but I'm not that interested in. Only a few third-party titles really stood out and the the rest (even the ones that reviewed well) ranged from poor to mediocre. I don't think the dated tech helped with some third-party devs trying to make massive HD-like experiences rather than playing to the strengths of the system.

Having said all that the best JRPG I've played the gen was on the Wii (Xenoblade).
