Meh, I don't buy it. If this game had better graphics and was released on PS3, I bet they'd be giving it a 9.5 and calling it GOTY.. |

I think the EGM review was a bit harsh... but it wasn't distinctly wrong. If the flaws this game has bugs you, it bugs you, and you shouldn't score it high just because everyone else did. A lot of high games get a few contrarian reviews because a point of reviews is to show different views of it's strengths and flaws. |
Even if they just let you hot swap characters in combat, that would be nice (NOTE: If you can do this, and I am too stupid to have figured it out, please correct my ignorance). I think it is forgivable, but yeah, like you said, being able to hand out tactics would be nice. There are many times where I will break an enemy and just be waiting fruitlessly for Reyn to "Wild Down" it to the ground. It would be nice to have a 'If enemy breaks, use topple' thing.
It doesnt ruin the game though. The game is great.

As much as I dislike the guy, I believe he did give Final fantasy 13 a 5.0/10. (Given I think this was before he was an official reviewer.)
Just seems to be more picky than others.

I see the EGM review as a desperate attempt to grab attention and views from being controversial. The review, whilst not inherently 'bad', seems to bring up faults which either aren't there (like the first 15 hours issue), or to stress lesser faults.
It's why Metacrititc should employ an outlier system...
EGM hasn't been relevant for 5 years, this is their way of getting recognized again. I personally thought that they were out of business until this review, so it worked.

Yeah it's a great game, and I like it slightly more overall than FF12 or Dragon Age, and a hell of a lot more than Dragon Age 2 which had those systems. Just if I was to make my perfect game that hasn't been made yet. I'd do that.
With reviews like EGM it's hard to tell if that's what they really fealt. Or if they're doing it or atleast influenced for hits, Maybe they they think it's an 8 or 7 game and they drop the score more for dramatic effect idk.
I like that it gets back to the open world feel of traditional JRPGs. I know that I can't truly go just anywhere to start off with, but nor could I do that in RPGs of yore. But it commonly felt like back then the only thing holding me back was strong monsters. Still, having a large world to explore beats corridors all day. The only game that works in the corridor sense was the Mass Effect series (and look what happened to that).
I love this game so far, can't wait to leave work and put in another 3-6 hours, yeehaw!

Totally looking forward to coming back and putting the smackdown on Gentle Rodriguez. That big goon is going down!
