Forums - Movies & TV - Remakes better than the originals.

The Longest Yard

Both are great but I like the newer one

Around the Network

Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the 1978 remake with Leonard Nimoy, Jeff Goldblum, and Donald Sutherland was superior to the original.

Neither Clash of the Titans movies were good =P

The original had a lot of charm though.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I disagree on the following remakes mentioned in this thread:

- Scarface (both movies are excellent and very different, but Hawks' original is at least as good as De Palma's remake and a milestone in the gangster movie genre)
- Cape Fear (one of Scorsese worst movies imo, the original with Peck and Mitchum is miles ahead)
- The Departed (at least a decent remake by Scorsese this time, but the original is better imo)
- War of the Worlds (original is far far better imo)
- The Mummy (same)

I agree on one movie mentioned: Ocean's Eleven. It's better than the original, though I don't like either movie.

I think there's a chance that I would like the remake of The Thing (from Another World) more than the original, but I can't judge as I've never seen the original, only a trailer on Youtube.

I think there's a high chance that I'd still like the original of Clash of the Titans more than the remake even if I had seen the remake. The original is stupid but very charming and has gorgeous Harryhausen stop motion effects.

BTW: No offense, but I doubt that everyone who mentioned movies in this thread have seen both versions. Especially Scarface, Cape Fear and 3:10 to Yuma.

Finally my own contribution:
- His Girl Friday (1940, Howard Hawks, with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell)
- The Front Page (1974, Billy Wilder, with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau)
Both are remakes of another great movie from 1931 (The Front Page, Lewis Milestone).
This is an interesting case, because I think it's probably the only time in movie history where all 3 movies are excellent, the original and the two remakes. I like the two remakes from '40 and '74 more though. His Girl Friday and Wilder's version of The Front Page are two of the best comedy movies I've ever seen.

Original Clash of the Titans >>> New Clash of the Titans. Really, the scenes with the giant scorpions almost made me lose all hope in the movie industry. That and the overall piss-poor acting of the movie.

And really, Boris Karloff Mummy destroy any of the crappy new Mummy trilogy. What's next? People telling that the Twilight Vampires are better than Nosferatu or Bela Lugosi Dracula? >_>

Thankfully, this is all just opinion and I think the newer versions I mentioned are better than the originals.

The Mummy (Just The Mummy, not Returns or Dragon), I find to be better. I also really enjoyed Clash of the Titans.

Would also like to add, I'm only 20, and my DVD/Bluray collection has many, many, many films from Years before the 90's/00's. I have more action films from the 70's/80's than you can shake a stick at... And my gangster collection is pure awesome! I love movies, from all generations. One of my favourite movies of all time is actually White Heat with Jimmy Cagney... 50's, if I remember correctly... Maybe earlier!

I may be wrong here, but where does the OP state that it's opinion only? The original Mummy is a timeless classic and pretty much one of the first horror films (at least one of the founders of the "monster" theme movies, just like Nosferatu, Dracula and Frankenstein). The mummy trilogy (of which the original mummy is an almost direct remake) is pretty much just summer popcorn flicks (I enjoyed the first two, but only because I'm an egyptian mythology fan).

There's nothing wrong with your opinion about the remakes being better than the originals (at least you don't go around calling them shit or anything), but I thought that this thread was also supposed to ask what movies were critically recieved better than the originals.

The OP doesn't say it isn't opinion neither, or that it's on critical acclaim

I just assumed this is like a "What do you think is better" thread, so I answered that way.

I really, really enjoyed The Mummy. It has good action, good comedy and great characters. It's just... A great  family enjoyable film. I love it!

Mind you, I didn't know The Departed was a remake, when it was first made/ By whom?

On Topic. I can't think of many remakes that are better than the original. Many of the cited I didn't even know were remakes. IMO, depending on the "When"you can't really compare. I mean, how to compare a 40 or even 50 years old to a remake. Even the acting is different. (style, not just quality)

War of the worlds ... that's a remake right?

It is, but you've obviously not seen the original, so I don't know what you're basing your opinion on.

The fact that it's old, so therefore must be shit.

I think I'd have a heart attack if I saw yout DVD collection.

Tell a lie, I like some pre 2000 horror like Candyman, Childs play, ect ect

Some of the best horror movies are actually moderately old, because being able to scare people depended more on a good idea and buiding tension than mindless shocks from gore ...

I recommend you check out movies like Jaws, Alien, and The Shining. All three are fantastic movies that are well written, well directed and well acted that build suspense throughout. On top of that, you should also check out foreign horror movies just to see what kind of crap hollywood is really producing.

True Grit is the only one that comes to mind, as I've seen both and found that the Coen brother's version is the superior movie (funny since I'm really not a fan of the Coen brothers... but it really was a fantastic movie).

The other one that I'm on the fence about is Willy Wonka/Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Both are great, and are quite different from one another. Gene Wilder was the better Willy Wonka, but I found Tim Burton's world was more awe inspiring. Too close to call on this one. ^_~

Alien? Yeah, great movie, but I'm quite sure there was a lot of gore in that one. If you want very scary movies with no gore, check out The Haunting, or even Psycho.
