Mind you, I didn't know The Departed was a remake, when it was first made/ By whom?

On Topic. I can't think of many remakes that are better than the original. Many of the cited I didn't even know were remakes. IMO, depending on the "When"you can't really compare. I mean, how to compare a 40 or even 50 years old to a remake. Even the acting is different. (style, not just quality)
