Forums - Sony - Sony needs to buy/start a RPG studio

Ok, so first I would like to point out that this is a very tough period for Sony financially. They will soon be releasing Vita, which is expected to sell at a loss on hardware for 3 years. This is particularly bad for handhelds - extra controllers on home consoles are a great source of income). They are also no doubt spending a lot of RnD money finishing the PS4, which shall release shortly afterafter Vita, and which will also likely be sold at a loss for the first 2+ years.

What this means, is that Sony have to be very careful about what developers they buy, and what new studios they open.

With the exception of those made by Nintendo or Square-Enix, JRPG's do not generally sell particularly well. This is doubly true this generation, the majority of new JRPG franchises have underperformed. Almost all the exceptions to this are on the DS. Look for example at all the money Microsoft poured into moneyhatting some (timed) exclusive JRPGs - total waste of money.

As for WRPGs, these also have a great danger of underperforming. Many do quite well, but others do not, and they can be quite expensive to make.

Sony have by far the largest 1st party, but they are squandering its potential. They need to cut unprofitable studios, and focus on games that they know there is an audience for, and most importantly, they need to win back third party support.

Also, platformers are much more popular as a genre than you appear to believe.

Polyphony was interested in making an RPG. Sony should let them, especially now that GT5 has flopped.

I think if they concentrate their resources get a good story write, bring back some classic RPG combat, and start legend of dragoon from scratch has potential to be the next dragon quest or final fantasy franchise. Too bad Xenogears developers never made a good game after Xenogears, Xenosagas were not as good, and now they belong to N.

Xenoblade disagrees.

On Topic:

Yes they do need to do something on that front.

I'm glad this isn't another thread about why sony should want to buy the overrated Level-5

JRPG devs SONY should buy are Atlus or Tri-Ace.

If those buyings aren't possible who made Wild Arms, TLOD etc? If they are still employed at Sony get them to make a new RPG.

Thank God there is somebody else here who isnt blinded by L5... they are SOOOO overated... I cant Stand them. Intill they shake the "L5 Curse" being compared to SE constantly is just a insult to SE.

Yeah I toally agree but the overrating gets even worse!

Some people on this site think Level 5 is like what SQUARESOFT was back in the day....I almost had a brain implosion when I read that a few months ago!

Not even close!!!

I love how all the people saying that L5 is overrated seem to ignore their best franchise.

When did Sony lose third party support though? I know they're not really getting third party exclusives, but that has nothing to do with them losing support, that's simply because of the development costs these days.

And I don't really think the profitability of any of their studios are a problem at this point. The only guys I can think of that might not be making them money are the Motorstorm team, and even then, they are some of Sony's 3D specialists, doing a lot of 3D R&D for Sony.

I think it's more important that the individual studios retain their creative freedom (as now), instead of being directed to specific projects that they may or may not want to be involved in.

I agree that is a hole in their first party line up that they are missing. If I were them I'd design a JRPG studio around the Atelier Team (like them, not buying Gust). A smaller cheaper studio making games that are profitable after 100k sales. Not every first party studio has to be a huge budget affair, sometimes you just want to fill a niche that some people enjoy to keep them coming to your system. Do that with a studio that also makes you a little profit and there really isn't a down side as far as I can see.

That's all to fill the JRPG hole obviously, I don't really but I'd do something similar with WRPGs. Keep things cheap until the team establishes themselves, if they get a good fanbase going that warrants an increase in budget then go ahead.

I am a appalled at the level of hate in this thread for level 5 they are one of the best JRPG studios in the business with the critically acclaimed Dark Cloud, Dark Chronicle(DC2) and Rouge Galaxy not to mention the soon to be released collaboration with Studio Ghibli NI NO KUNI PS3 Version.

SCE Japan Studio dose make JRPGs from time EG FolksSoul, but I agree SONY needs to make more on a constant bases with dedicated teams it would be cool if PD did make that JRPG they were thinking about to. but almost all JRPGs published by SCE are 2nd Party and that seems to be the way they like to work.
