Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Can the Switch attract new gamers?

Will Nintendo attract more customers with the Switch?

yes 63 32.47%

no way 76 39.18%

don't know 40 20.62%

don't care 15 7.73%

Total:194

Completely new to home console gaming? No.

The Wii crowd? Possibly, but the pricing is making it hard, and marketing needs to succeed extremely well.

Traditional gamers? Nintendo fans are a given for the most part, but the rest are mostly a no. Pricing is probably the biggest issue, because gamers are quite price-conscious and Switch offers horrible value in many regards.

I just don't see how the Switch will attract new consumers.

They'll get Wii U owners and 3DS owners (many of whom owned both so it's not Wii U + 3DS). Beyond that, things get rocky.

Zelda is going to attract some Playstation/Xbox gamers who can afford a second system. Pokemon GO might pull in some casuals but I doubt it will be a significant amount, as most casuals will be content with what they have.

It's also important to realize that the Wii, as popular as it was, also somewhat poisoned the well.

A LOT of casuals bought it. A lot of casuals also played it for a little while then pushed it under the TV and forgot about it. They now know that console gaming is not for them. They're not interested in another expensive gaming system. They have their phone and they're content.

In addition to that, despite the hipster marketing of the Switch, they've shown nothing that comes close to Wii Sports in terms of consumer impact.

I simply have trouble visualizing the Switch expanding Nintendo's consumer base by a significant margin.

IMO switch should come bundled with ARMS. Yes, 1 2 Switch is the obvious pack in title and 50$ for it is hideous, but ARMS seem unique, fun and most importantly, really good.
It does well demonstrating some of the switches features, such as the HD rumble and the improved motion controls, but also leaves you the freedom of choosing traditional controls.

If Nintendo had thrown both 1 2 Switch and ARMS in as pack ins I wouldn't even have minded the price aymore.

I agree, Arms would be a great packin. Arms as packin and Swicth Sports Resort releases in the first 6 months. This would be a major help.

I think a price cut will help with all groups

But no, I don't think they will attract many new gamers

There are no new gamers anymore apart from the unborn-18months.

Will Switch have people put their smartphone/tablet/PS4/XB1/PC games away or play when they otherwise wouldn't?

Yes.

They can but likely it would have to be through a new generation of kids and Nintendo coming up with a new IP as big as what Mario was for the 80s or Pokemon for the 90s. Nintendo needs a new breakout character IP for a new generation if they want to go beyond the sales roof they have now.

The Wii Sports crowd? Forget it. Why would you pay $50 to play this:

When you can get similar types of experiences on iOS/Android, a device virtually everyone has in their home for free or $2 tops.

To be honest that Ellen Charades game which is $0.99 to download even looks more fun. Too much "stop, go for 10 seconds, now wait for a minute" in 1,2 Switch.

Nope. If Switch is going to find new gamers it likely is kids who weren't even born with the Wii/DS was released 11-13 years ago. And they need to get to them before they get inundated with mobile and Playstation. They gotta find a way to get to these kids, and probably the best way if something like Splatoon takes off like gangbusters. Gotta have something new that does it though, can't keep relying on the same group of kids who grew up in the 80s/90s forever.

From what we seen so far, I'm weary.

Nintendo's whole strategy is banking on it. Its why they brought back the Wiimotes. Its why they went with a familiar form factor. If they don't get the Wii crowd, or even a fraction of the Wii crowd, Switch will be in rough shape. Personally I think its a rough sale. Wii came out of nowhere with a easy to understand concept, easy to understand controller, a casual price, and came packed with a game that made fantastic use of the control scheme.

Switch is doing none of these things.

Of course it can, but not the way Nintendo presented it on Friday. That was lame and either they're doing really bad at getting software on the thing, or they're very bad at marketing.

I could see it happening, it has a lot to offer
