They can but likely it would have to be through a new generation of kids and Nintendo coming up with a new IP as big as what Mario was for the 80s or Pokemon for the 90s. Nintendo needs a new breakout character IP for a new generation if they want to go beyond the sales roof they have now.

The Wii Sports crowd? Forget it. Why would you pay $50 to play this:

When you can get similar types of experiences on iOS/Android, a device virtually everyone has in their home for free or $2 tops.

To be honest that Ellen Charades game which is $0.99 to download even looks more fun. Too much "stop, go for 10 seconds, now wait for a minute" in 1,2 Switch.

Nope. If Switch is going to find new gamers it likely is kids who weren't even born with the Wii/DS was released 11-13 years ago. And they need to get to them before they get inundated with mobile and Playstation. They gotta find a way to get to these kids, and probably the best way if something like Splatoon takes off like gangbusters. Gotta have something new that does it though, can't keep relying on the same group of kids who grew up in the 80s/90s forever.
