Grave of the fireflies.

Have you watched The Tale of Princess Kaguya by chance? It's made by the same director as Grave of the Fireflies. And if you can, can you tell me which one is more depressing or how Fireflies' sadness differs from Kaguya? I believe Fireflies takes place during a war? I haven't seen the film yet, so please don't spoil it if you can!

Actually a majority of the film takes place just after the end of World War II but it does show one of the fire bombings by American planes of Tokyo.  Its a lot sadder and depressing then Princess Monoke since some of the event in it really took place and its based on real live experience of the author who wrote the short story its based on.

I was comparing it to Princess Kaguya

Mononoke was sad, but the reason for its sadness is something I've encountered in movies before. I honestly felt more sad at one point in Totoro than Mononoke lol

Around the Network

It's hard to decide between Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa of the valley of the wind. But since Studio ghibli officially formed after Nausicaa I will go with Princess Mononoke.

This is the Game of Thrones

Where you either win

or you DIE

They are in a terrible position atm. Despite being an hyper conservative idiot who could not change with his time, myazaki was a great director, which is son isn't. There were only three possible successor to myazaki, being his son (which happend to not be great), Mamoru Hosoda (Digimon creator and director of Wolf Children Ame and Yuki/Summer Wars) and Makoto Shinkai (specialized in shorts/medium films, 5cm per second/The garden of words).

At this point the last news I heard from them is that they were working on a anime series (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/japans-studio-ghibli-produce-first-676598). Which means they are ruined and desperate.

Forgot to say which was their best movies : The wind Rises.

Dang this is quite depressing time be a Ghibli fan. Still I hope the anime TV show turns out okay...

I haven't seen the Wind Rises yet but I'm planning to soon! I've only seen 8 Ghibli films so far plus Nausicaa and the Lupin film but those two films weren't made in Ghibli.

For someone who is lass of a fan when it comes to fantasy setting Ghibli movies I really lovied the wind rises.

While it's indeed a sad time to be a Ghibli fan, there is still a lot of great Anime Film directors (Hosoda and Shinkai I mentionned earlier, and probably a lot more). 2D animation not being dead and buried in 2015 is pretty great by itself.

Around the Network

As far as I know Miyazaki and Takahata are quitting and therefore no big talent is left in Studio Ghibli.

I have a hard time to decide which are the best movies, my pick is:
1. Whisper of the heart
2. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
3. Tomb of the Fireflies
4. Princess Mononoke
5. Spirited Away

These are the must see for Studio Ghibli in my opinion. Istill haven't seen Porco Rosso and Princess Kaguya yet, they might add to this list.

And I agree with many here, that you can't watch Tomb of the Fireflies while keeping your eyes dry.

Ghiblis situation makes me really sad. They are my all-time favourite movie studio. I love the fact that they still did georgeous hand painted animations, now that Disney abandoned ship on that front. Seeing such a wonderful studio go down like this is terrible.
No wonder they kept pulling miyazaki out of retirement over and over again. They needed his direction. Now that he's left everything is going to hell, sadly. They seem to have failed to groom new and upcoming talent properly and it's coming back to bite them in the arse now. I mean if Disney survived Walts death, theres no reason Ghibly shouldn't survive Miyazakis retirement.

I've seen a lot of their films, but not all of them. I really waynted to go and see Princess Kaguya but it had such a limited run here that I missed it (it had like, a single show in my town). I havent heard anything about Marnie yet, but I've been meaning to watch it ever since I saw the japanense trailer.
My favourites would be

1. Howls moving Castle (Not only a wonderful film, but it also introduced me to the brilliant Diana Wynne Jones)
2. Spirited Away
3. My neighbour Totoro
4. Princess Mononoke
5. Ponyo

Grave of the fireflies gets a special mention because it's the most emotionally impactful of all their films, it has me weeping like a baby everytime.

Well I haven't seen The Tale of the Princess Kaguya yet will probably see it eventually.

Spirited Away is my favorite.

I hate Grave of the Fireflies. It's so depressing I don't recommend anyone watching it unless they want to cry.

No... but... but... Ni no Kuni :(
