I guess my example was too extreme.
But something needs to be done about repeat offenders, they just dont take offenses seriously enough, especially posters who have been here for a long time.
And maybe if there was some sort of rule that dealt with users who are repeatingly offending for a consistant period of time, then Carl might not have had such a long ban history. Loving Carl isnt a good enough reason to not help move the community past the constant fanboy bickering that goes on in almost every thread.

But the thing is, we need to take the most balanced route that we can when moderating people. There is no one moderation fits all; we do things by a case to case basis because there are a plethora of different aspects to consider. There are a lot of people that are great users but can sometimes lose their cool or get offended a bit easy, most moderations that I've seen from my time on this site would fall in that category. From what I've seen, whenever there is a repeat offender who obviously doesn't add much to the site, he is shown the door rather quickly.

@first bolded, I dont have an issue with this. But if this "great" user is regularly loosing their cool or insulting other users, or clearly has some sort of agenda then this user isnt as great as we think they are. Someone from the MOD team needs to address it directly either by a serious warning or something. Otherwise its like a free for all.
@second bolded, here is where i completely disagree. Your basically implying that repeat offenders who do add to this site gets some sort of leniency towards them. In fact whether you implied it or not its irrelevant, because we all know it happens. This should never be the case. Special treatment is never the answer. And like i said if you have something in place to address the issue then long standing members will learn not to break the rules.
Just wanted to make something else clear about my original point: Having a long ban history doesnt necessarily mean that user should have been permabanned etc. But if this behaviour happend from week to week or month to month over a prolonged perioud of time then something needs to happen irrespective of that users post count, thread creation rate or general awesomeness. I think its a more than reasonable suggestion and you guys should look into some sort of way of dealing with it. Maybe not my solution but something that also addresses the problem. The mod team would first have to all agree that there is a problem though and im not sure what their stance is on that. Some people are perfectly happy with the way things are now.
Personally i feel the community is on a downward trajectory, and im not talking about the usual "OMG this place was awesome in 07" arguments. Im talking about the actual discussions and how they progress from OP to last post. Its not pleasant if your an active member on the forums. And i think we can all agree that there are a lot of members that are leaving because of this. Funnily enough if you go and have a look at those threads and try and find out what/who was the cause of this shitstorm that went on here.....you will find the same people that are on your monthly ban reports at the heart of the issue. Its as clear as day to me.
Anyways...thanks for responding though yo_john!
