If there ever was a game that needed to count play-time, it is 'Rollercoaster Tycoon 2'. It's a shame I will never know, but I have undoubtedly put many thousands of hours into it, which likely makes it my most ever played game. There's really just one other contender, one a couple places back; 'SimCity 4'. I still have many of my saved-games from the very beginning, dozens and dozens of them and there's more added to that list on a fairly regular basis even though certain parks alone take hundreds of hours to build.

A game which I played so regularly for such a long time has got to be good, and it is placed high on the list, because it is. The player is unlimited, and you can build anything you can imagine. The only downside is that the world didn't stand still, and advancements have been made in real life in ride-technology in the last one-and-a-half decade since the game's release that isn't possible to replicate in the game without some doses of imagination, or hacks. It doesn't spoil the fun however.

Even with those thousands, maybe even ten-thousand, of hours of playtime, I barely completed a single scenario. They're not interesting; the sandbox-mode, and the limitless design possibilities that come with it is where it's at, and I've gotten very good at it. Even without the use of the plethora of user-created content. In fact, what you see in the screenshot is vanilla, and mine.

#5: This GameBoy game put it's more famous home-console brother that was already in my list (even though it obviously was groundbreaking), to shame.

Link's Awakening?

Fixed.

edit: Anyways, dropping an extra hint here.

#5 - It was originally supposed to be the final chapter of a trilogy, and it remained that way for quite some time until it eventually got a sequel. The franchise's since continued with many more releases.
Though it was a trilogy, all three games were released on different consoles, one of them a handheld. The eventual 4th game would also be released on a handheld, but while the franchise's had many releases since, none have been a continuation of this main story.

Super Metroid?

Positions #45-#36: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=8944604

The next 10 positions:

#35 - Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions

What I like the most about this game: The story,  which is one of my favorites in any game; the gameplay, the job system, the dialogue direction (I love the localization in the PSP version, which is the one I played).

#34 - Paper Mario

What I like the most about this game: The sense of adventure that it gives you; the battle system, which is a great twist to the traditional turn-based combat; the party members, the dungeons, the paper-inspired art-style (it's aged like fine wine and I think it's easily one of the best looking N64 games), the soundtrack.

#33 - Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings and The Conquerors Expansion

What I like the most about this game: The medieval setting (with a little bit of the Renaissance), the overall gameplay flow of the game (the way you advance through different ages to get new technologies/units/buildings), I love how different from each other are the civilizations and the fantastic single-player campaigns. I must mention that this was one of my first video games and it's the one that I've played for the most hours.

#32 - Metroid Prime

What I like the most about this game: The incredible level design; the way you progress through the game by getting new suits, weapons (like ice beam or plasma beam) and abilities that allow you to enter areas you couldn't access to before, or to get items that you couldn't get before; the atmosphere, the environmental story-telling, the art direction, the soundtrack.

#31 - Pokémon HeartGold

What I like the most about this game: The atmosphere of the Johto region; the big amount of post-game content that the game has, which includes exploring the Kanto region and defeating its gym leaders, the fast story pacing, the incredible soundtrack. This game is a great example of how a remake should be done.

#30 - Final Fantasy VII

What I like the most about this game: All the memorable story moments that it has, Cloud's character development, the big amount of extra content that the game has (spent so much time breeding chocobos), the Materia system, the fantastic soundtrack.

#29 - Final Fantasy X

What I like the most about this game: The overall plot and all the memorable moments that the story has, the lore of Spira, the fast-paced turn-based battle system, the sphere grid, the art direction and visuals, the amazing soundtrack.

#28 - Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time

What I like the most about this game: The space exploration, which allows you to find planetoids that have some really good platforming sections and is one of the things that blowed me away the most about this game; the overall gameplay flow of the game and how past-paced it is, the great variety of weapons you can use to defeat foes, the variety of levels that the game has; the Clank sections, which are brilliantly designed; the humor. My favorite Ratchet & Clank game.

#27 - Pokémon Platinum

What I like the most about this game: The huge amount of post-game content and optional areas that it has; the layout of the Sinnoh region, its atmosphere and its lore; the regional pokédex; the champion battle, which is one of the most challenging in pokémon (also, Cynthia is my waifu); the soundtrack (I think the music of the Gen 4 games is really underrated). My favorite pokémon game and the one that I've played for the most hours.

#26 - Suikoden II

What I like the most about this game: The story writing, which is just brilliant and is one of my favorites in any game; the memorable story moments that the game has; the political tone of the story, the characters and their different personalities, the way you develop your castle by inviting characters to live in it; the sidequests you do to get characters into your castle, some of which have their own mini-stories.

EDIT: Swapped FFX and Ratchet.

Okami is just one of the most beatiful games ever made. This is the reason it works so incredibly well even after 12 years.

It is not just the cell-shaded art-style. It is the way nature is restored through your actions. It is how the humans fit in so well with the nature.

Gameplay is classic Zelda-like action adventure and it works great. The movements of the wolf-form the sun-goddess Amaterasu is in are that fluid and feel that great, that is is pure joy to run over the landscape and fight demons.

Whoever didn't try the game or one of the countless remaster: what is wrong with you?

Link's Awakening?

Yes!

To be clear, A Link to the Past is brilliant, and important to me. I could credit it as the game that made me a Zelda and Nintendo fan, or better yet, made me a real gamer. I just like to exaggerate.

Xenoblade Chronicles caught me with the setting. The characters live on giant titans! This is incredible. You can look up to the other titan looming in the sky. You knwo which body part you currently traverse. This is great.

Also the story was enticing and the gameplay is superb. The music is god-level and I often listen to the OST while reading a book. I like the openness of the areas and that they are so different and colorful. Also the inhabitants of this world are so interesting.

Overall a great package, which makes a great game. I kinda wish they would make a HD-remaster of this game.
