It likely won't pass Halo 3 in sales.

why?

Sequels just generally don't do as well for big franchises, unless an increase in quality is there, and Halo 3 set the bar too high in my opinion.

Gran Turismo 3 outsold Gran Turismo 4

Metal Gear Solid 2 outsold Metal Gear Solid 3

Final Fantasy X outsold Final Fantasy XII

Halo 3 is around 10.30 million and still rising, who knows how high it will end up, but I don't think it will be reached (harrrrrrrrrr).

ah but...

halo 3 > halo2 > halo CE

and there are plenty of other instances of  the same.  COD springs to mind.

I'll throw in Uncharted 2>Uncharted, though it hasn't happened yet it dang well better.

Halo 3 could be the franchise's peak game. But ODST sales seem to indicate there is still a healthy appetite for Halo. Xbox 360 isn't a one trick pony though, so I think there is probably greater diversity among 360 owners. Meaning a bigger install base won't necessarily = significantly higher Reach sales. If there is something fresh to the game other than improved graphics then who knows what might be achieved? Still 15 million seems like an ambitious target.

San Andreas > Vice City > GTA3

Modern Warfare 2 > CoD4

Those two, Uncharted and Halo are pretty much the only series that increase in sales over the course of a gen. If you look at MGS, GT, Jak, Resistance, they've all decreased in sales.

Quite a few games in the HD generation have sold 15 million. They just weren't HD.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Why would Reach outsell Halo 3? It might do more in the first week but I don't see why it would be higher lifetime.

With all due respect, everyone said the same thing with Halo 3. Noone believed Halo 3 would trounce over Halo 2's sales. Especially not getting 10 million. ODST is an expansion. Best ever selling expansion. We cant expect everyone to buy an add on. But Reach has every oppurtunity to sell 15 million lifetime. I believe Halo 3 will finish around 12 million in 2 years time. So an extra 3 million isn't alot for this franchise.

Sorry to go off topic here :P

Best ever selling expansion?

Wrath of the Lich King

Burning Crusade

Presumably some of the Sims expansions

Wii Fit + eventually will outsell it

Starcraft: Brood Wars?

Can't think of any others atm

It is ambitious, but if X360 will be able to sell 55-60m consoles till the end of 2012 it makes it possible + it is "hard" to find, a person who didn't play Halo 3 on his/her console, and it still sells well despite that it's old and not that pretty. The advantages of Reach are mainly: it will start at high userbase, with new engine and probably with the most epic history in the series.

15 mil is kinda pushing i think. if any game could, its a halo game, but reach would have to bring something completely new to the table. halo 3 has sold well, but i feel like if reach plays the same and has few to no changes in gameplay, that fewer people will want to buy it. here's to hoping though

Possibly above Halo 3, yes. 15 million without bundling....no. Typically a franchise does not see that huge of jump.

9-12 Million range for me.

Not likely, imho...It might outsell Halo 3, but not by 50%...it depends on how much B/C the next box has as well...and when the next Halo shooter launches. If Halo REach is full HD, and delivers like Halo 3...it's possible, but not very likely, imho.

I think it for a few reasons.

Main reason - I expect Xbox 3 to be out by late 2011/ early 2012. Which i also expect there to be a Halo game for launch, cutting Reach legs by a lot.

Others - Halo Wars/ ODST will have put a bunch of people off.
Bigger install base doesn't always mean bigger software sales.
I don't expect it to have the hype Halo 3 had.
Another CoD game will be launching around the same time (i expect the 'casuals' to go for this)
