Forums - Nintendo - If it weren't for Wii, I wouldn't own a console this gen.

But i can easily earn whatever money i've spent on my PC in less than a months time by using it for work aside from gaming. Can you do that with PS3/x360/wii ?

I have to admit that consoles are good for relaxation, but they aren't cheap compared to PC - they can be used only for gaming (and moviewatching and eventually internet browsing), while PC's are a lot more.

I also have to say that buying PC only for gaming is more expensive than buying a console, so it that is the case, you're better off with a console

You are much better off buying an XBox 360 or a PS3 and buying a standard computer to work on than buying a top notch computer that you have to update all the time so jsut so you can play the newest games.  If you buy an dXbox 360 or PS3, for a few hundred dollars you play new games worry free for several years.

You could argue that PC gaming is better, everyone has their preferences, but to think that PC gaming is cheaper is an obsurd.

PC gaming is easily cheaper, you don't need a top notch PC (especially nowadays). Now you see hundreds of PC games coming out on retail at $30 or $40 price point, way cheaper than console games.

You can easily buy a $700 PC that will last you until the end of this generation and a couple of years into the next gen. And upgrading is becoming more and more obsolete due to the fact that PCs can last much more time playing games today.

If I had lots of money to waste, I'd buy a top-notch PC, but for even half of that price I can get a decent gaming PC which will run anything. For the price of a PS3 you can put together a nice dualcore gaming solution which will have the same graphical abilities. For a couple of dollars more you could sqeeze even a quad-core processor(altho it's not needed for gaming).

Now that ATI has put his act together and started releasing competitive gfx cards again, the gfx race will continue, the prices will fall, and in two years time PC will have far more graphical abilites than consoles.

.

Fanboy Claims he wouldn't have bought a console this gen if it weren't for his console of choice. I never would have guessed >_>

Im not one of thoes hardcore PC gamers infact im not into PC gaming since i cant fork over money every couple years to upgrade (go ahead say what you want but im not bashing pc gaming) hell my notebook cant even run Doom 3 and its just 2 years old.

Ive been a gamer since the NES era and i the only reason i bought the wii was because of all the upcomming games from nintendo and third party that were anounced but so far im disspointed by some develoeprs cause they've been brainwashed that wiis mostly family-friendly but they will learn it hard way when they dont take the it seriously soon

Why are we talking about about PC gaming? The thread talks about a simple fact: the console market now is bigger thanks to the Wii. I didn't own a console last generation, now I do. And also my interest in videogames is renewed. Is true, i've never stopped playing, but mostly on the PC, which is also used for a lot of other things. Buying a machine ONLY to play games is something a lot of people didn't do in the past. This so-called casuals, once they are hooked, they will stay for good. And that is thanks to Nintendo. Just like the movies, we will have tons of different games, most of them will be crap, but since people love going to the movies, the industry keeps producing, and once in a while we have something good. Exactly with videogames. Only that thanks to the Wii, this entertainment business is not some thing nerds do. Its out there, everbody can enjoy it and since it is profitable will last. Now, thanks to the Wii, another crash it's less likely. Imagine that all the movies, everyone of them, were directed by Woody Allen. I mean, I love his movies but I understand that most of the people don't. So thanks god there's Steven Spielberg and producers of blockbusters, that makes posible this massive entertainment profitable and posible. Same is happening now with videogames. Thanks god there´s the Wii.

PD: I wish I had money to buy all the consoles, I'm not a Fanboy.

To equal a 360 would probably take $350 to $400 on a PC.   $500 would get you a PC that runs Bioshock, Mass Effect, GTA IV, Gears, and any other game with far better visual quality than 360/PS3.  Also, many PC users prefer Steam to Live, and there's no law against using a PC in the living room, 360 controller in hand.

Not to mention a monitor, keyboard, speakers, as well as something to put all that stuff in as well as the know how and hours to do it.  That's well over $500 for a system that will be out of date in a year and wont be able to run new games like the XBox 360 can.

I dont want to play PC games with a controller on the couch (just as a majority of other people), I like the monitor and keyboard for those games.  Thats not to mention different setups for PC and console games, I'd have to sacrifice actions and quality to play a PC game with a controller.

Does 360 come with a TV?

Does 360 come with speakers?

Does 360 come with a free couch?

Mouse + Keyboard: $15

As for difficulty, putting a PC together is easier than some lego kits.

As for going out of date in a year, that's ridiculous.   The system is far more powerful than 360, and games are still being made for 360.  So when FFXIII comes out, or any future multiplatform game, the PC above will be able to run them with better visuals than 360, as usual.

The current state of multiplatform gaming has made low-end PC's future-proof.

Now, see, I have a problem with that statement. No, the 360 doesn't come with those things but every single person who buys a console already has those things. And they use it for other stuff, too, not just gaming.

The problem for me with PC gaming is that whole installing games thing. That takes up room on your PC, and the more games you have, the slower your computer runs. Plus, actually buying a PC that runs games decently can be quite expensive (easily more expensive than a console). And playing games in full HD on a huge screen is an experience in itself.

Addressing your points:

1) People who buy a 360 already have a TV.  People who buy a PC do not have a monitor, keyboard or mouse.

False for several reasons.  A) It's possible for a non-TV owner to buy a console, there is no law that states you must own a TV to purchase one.  My brother this last week is a good example, buying both at the same time.  B) Many PC owners already have monitors, keyboards and mice, as do console owners.  C) You can hook a PC up to a TV, just as easy as a console - negating the need for a monitor.

It's simply not fair to include a monitor in the price of a PC, and not include a TV in the price of a console.

2) The more games you have, the slower your computer runs.

False.  HDD space has very litte to do with overall computer speed, and if it does, you need a defrag.

3) Building a PC that runs games decently can be quite expensive.

Sort of true, but not much. You'll spend about $100 more than a console building a gaming PC.  See the $500 rig linked in the quote above, which outperforms 360/PS3 in visuals.

The whole point of this thread is that 360/PS3 are trying so hard to be PC's, that they end up overlapping PC gaming - and for anyone who knows their way around PC's, the consoles come up short.   I mean, they just found online gaming!  They're still amazed by user created content!  For non-PC owners I can see why it's incredible, but for the rest of us, been there done that (in higher res and more detail).

Wii embraces the qualities of a console, takes gaming in a different direction from PC's, and that makes it the only console worthy of a purchase for a PC gamer.

PC + Wii owners unite.  Our last-gen dying platforms have access to nearly every 90+ rated game this gen.  Building a PC that visually outperforms PS360 is cheap and easy.    Oct 7th 2010 predictions (made Dec 17th '08)
PC: 10^9
Wii: 10^8

Well said. May I add game installations to the mix? Many PS3 games require installation, just like PC games do. Oh, and Sony allows you to install Linux on it. On the other hand, I can see why a PC owner would buy a PS3 or a 360. If you have a PC just for games, a console is a cheaper alternative (well, without the games). And there's quite a few console exclusives that are good enough to justify a console's purchase (at least for some people).

@frybread

Amazing post guy, I was considering bringing that up in refference to LBP.

At first I didn't understand why people thought Little Big Planet would be huge, so I restudied to game, got into the beta and saw for myself. I can say safely that I wasn't impressed with anything except the graphics. (It looks pretty) I also like the narrator's voice and the music.

But the game it self granted a beta was not something special in any way. That's when it dawned on me, myself being a PC gamer for years now had been introduced to user generated content since 1997 and a game I played back then allowed you to even develop your own game of sorts, people created shooters, rpgs, action games all within this game. A Microsoft game I believe it was dungeon siege allowed for created maps that could be added to the over all. Warcraft 3 was by far the most impressive I rushed to be the first to make a over the shoulder 3rd person shooter on that, after playing the over head version, it took several weeks to perfect it but I had a playable version up in the mean while. In the end this kind of content didn't seem so amazing as I didn't notice it missing from console games at all.

Little Big Planet however is quite simple to break down.
It is a weak platformer (Traits not quality)
Strong level editor (Traits not quality)
Very mediocore additional complexity. (Traits not quality)

It's nothing amazing but it has a lot of elements that can keep you busy but only if your interested in designing. The only thing that set me back in truely enjoying the beta was the limited world you had to play with, I wanted to create a rush up mountain race game that involved vertigo and cliff point free falls with rushed incline rises. However the levels were just too small. =.= (I'd suck at being a level designer.)

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

If Nintendo had tried to release a Cube360, I would have yawned and done without.  PC would have been more than enough. Am I alone on this?

I mean, 6th gen was boring enough with all the cinematic games, but console players seem to still be enamored with the FPS, a genre that has been well explored and done to death on PC.  Think about it, they're just now discovering online gaming with Halo 2 or Halo 3. Much like country music, they're 15 years behind the rest of the industry.  Online deathmatch? Doom, 1993.  Team based tactical gaming? Tribes, 1998.  It's an old, old genre.

From reading countless forums - especially VGC, one thing I've noticed about Wii gamers is that they're not new to gaming.  They're old pros, and the stats back this up (only 10% of owners are expanded market)  I also have another suspicion - Wii owners are likely to be PC gamers.  Am I right?

When you spend a big chunk of your time playing MMO's, or competitive FPS/RTS, it's a nice change to play Wii, especially with friends and family.  And as PC gamers we're not prone to buzzwords like "HD" since we played Dark Forces in HD back in 1995.  Also, Crysis kind of makes you jaded to any console attempts at realism.

We're exactly the kind of people Nintendo was targeting.  People growing older, getting tired of FMV-laden "cinematic" gaming, wishing for a new experience.  We're why Nintendo was predicting a downturn in gaming, and they had to do something to keep our interest.

Judging from sales of traditional consoles, Nintendo was right.

Concrete proof.
