Forums - Nintendo - If it weren't for Wii, I wouldn't own a console this gen.

To equal a 360 would probably take $350 to $400 on a PC.   $500 would get you a PC that runs Bioshock, Mass Effect, GTA IV, Gears, and any other game with far better visual quality than 360/PS3.  Also, many PC users prefer Steam to Live, and there's no law against using a PC in the living room, 360 controller in hand.

Not to mention a monitor, keyboard, speakers, as well as something to put all that stuff in as well as the know how and hours to do it.  That's well over $500 for a system that will be out of date in a year and wont be able to run new games like the XBox 360 can.

I dont want to play PC games with a controller on the couch (just as a majority of other people), I like the monitor and keyboard for those games.  Thats not to mention different setups for PC and console games, I'd have to sacrifice actions and quality to play a PC game with a controller.

Does 360 come with a TV?

Does 360 come with speakers?

Does 360 come with a free couch?

Mouse + Keyboard: $15

As for difficulty, putting a PC together is easier than some lego kits.

As for going out of date in a year, that's ridiculous.   The system is far more powerful than 360, and games are still being made for 360.  So when FFXIII comes out, or any future multiplatform game, the PC above will be able to run them with better visuals than 360, as usual.

The current state of multiplatform gaming has made low-end PC's future-proof.

PC + Wii owners unite.  Our last-gen dying platforms have access to nearly every 90+ rated game this gen.  Building a PC that visually outperforms PS360 is cheap and easy.    Oct 7th 2010 predictions (made Dec 17th '08)
PC: 10^9
Wii: 10^8

If Nintendo had tried to release a Cube360, I would have yawned and done without.  PC would have been more than enough. Am I alone on this?

I mean, 6th gen was boring enough with all the cinematic games, but console players seem to still be enamored with the FPS, a genre that has been well explored and done to death on PC.  Think about it, they're just now discovering online gaming with Halo 2 or Halo 3. Much like country music, they're 15 years behind the rest of the industry.  Online deathmatch? Doom, 1993.  Team based tactical gaming? Tribes, 1998.  It's an old, old genre.

From reading countless forums - especially VGC, one thing I've noticed about Wii gamers is that they're not new to gaming.  They're old pros, and the stats back this up (only 10% of owners are expanded market)  I also have another suspicion - Wii owners are likely to be PC gamers.  Am I right?

When you spend a big chunk of your time playing MMO's, or competitive FPS/RTS, it's a nice change to play Wii, especially with friends and family.  And as PC gamers we're not prone to buzzwords like "HD" since we played Dark Forces in HD back in 1995.  Also, Crysis kind of makes you jaded to any console attempts at realism.

We're exactly the kind of people Nintendo was targeting.  People growing older, getting tired of FMV-laden "cinematic" gaming, wishing for a new experience.  We're why Nintendo was predicting a downturn in gaming, and they had to do something to keep our interest.

Judging from sales of traditional consoles, Nintendo was right.

Sorry to hear that. If it weren't for PS3, I wouldn't own a console this gen. Too many good games to pass up. I primarily play on my PC. Warhammer has most of my attention right now. Used to be WoW.

Yeah, the only reason I own a television and a couch is to play Xbox 360 on it.

Now, see, I have a problem with that statement. No, the 360 doesn't come with those things but every single person who buys a console already has those things. And they use it for other stuff, too, not just gaming.

The problem for me with PC gaming is that whole installing games thing. That takes up room on your PC, and the more games you have, the slower your computer runs. Plus, actually buying a PC that runs games decently can be quite expensive (easily more expensive than a console). And playing games in full HD on a huge screen is an experience in itself.

I don't know why PC gamers get so defensive about their choice, but for me, a console is better by a mile if you just wanna game.

For the record, my gaming currently consists of playing Smash Bros on my Wii (on a 27" non-HD TV) and Counter-Strike on my PC. So believe me, I'm not one of those biased console owners who won't even give PC gaming a chance.

# of games above 75 on Metacritic (including downloadable):

360: 241     DS: 144

PS3: 152     PSP: 126

Wii: 85

Not in my particular case. However, I would not have gotten into the current generation (at least not as early as I did), had the wii not been released. I would have stuck with my gamecube, bought a few more games, and eventually gotten a PS2 at some point (or a PS3 if it came with BC at a reasonable price near the end of the generation).

The thing is that the PC is the largest market in gaming while the consoles are niche products. ~65% of the game development happends for PC only while the 3 current gen consoles have to fight for the rest of ~35%.

VGChartz board is console orieted so you the console lovers threat us the PC gamers like we are the niche market, while in reality you are.

Wii is the only console with games that don't have a better PC version (please don't list me 100 FPS's that ain't got a PC version; most of them didn't because they don't worth one) so this is what made me finally buy a console.

Sure ... today's PCs may be outdated in 1-2 years while the PS360 won't but they do so because the games for PC improve in the same time as the hardware while the consoles don't. In 2 years the PC will be for PS360 what PS360 is to Wii in terms of graphics which is very sad because graphics are what sells PS360.

If it weren't for Wii, I wouldn't own a console this gen so Im with you.

If it weren't for Wii, i would probably buy a ps2 slim and play it when i get tired from sitting in front of PC.

But i can easily earn whatever money i've spent on my PC in less than a months time by using it for work aside from gaming. Can you do that with PS3/x360/wii ?

I have to admit that consoles are good for relaxation, but they aren't cheap compared to PC - they can be used only for gaming (and moviewatching and eventually internet browsing), while PC's are a lot more.

I also have to say that buying PC only for gaming is more expensive than buying a console, so it that is the case, you're better off with a console

.

same for me. I mostly play Nintendo games as you can see from my collection.
