Forums - Nintendo - What Will The Next 3D Metroid Look Like?

Do you think there will be a Metroid Prime 5? Will Nintendo opt for an entirely different branding for 3D Metroid? In what ways could Nintendo evolve on the 3D Metroid formula?

Personally, I don’t see another entry to the Metroid Prime series as something Nintendo would want to pursue.

Pretty sure Retro already started hiring for Prime 5. It will be a Prime 5. I said this in another thread. I like all Prime games even 4. But if I am being honest they feel a little dated. Prime 4 in some ways still feels like a Gamecube game. Mainly movement, presentation. Narrative. I would like a new studio to get a shot at a FP 3D Metroid. One that would make Samus feel as nimble and fast in 3D as Metroid Dread. One that gives Samus a lot of personality in body language like Dread.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

After having played Prime 4 for a couple of hours, I hope it's not the same formula. Don't get me wrong, I really like the game, but it does feel a bit dated. If it would have come out early in the WiiU era, it would have been considered a classic. Crossgen with Switch, still an absolute banger. But as of 2025, it just feels like Prime, with some already done to the death mechanics, in games that released more than a decade ago.

Now, it's still Prime, so it plays really well, but I feel that the formula has run its course. Maybe a 3rd person take could reinvigorate the series? Just throwing it out there, as I have no clue how it could work.

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

It will be Prime 5. It is true that Prime 4 ended up a gamble. It was an expensive game and has sold around 1 million units. And the critic and user reception is more tepid than the trilogy.
Still, the engine can be reused and changed as needed. Don't expect it soon. I'm thinking it will arrive as Switch 2 is replaced.

I would like them to try something new with 3D Metroid. Something Fresh.

I'd love to see a first/third person hybrid. Scanning is first person, but action is third person. This could have Samus move faster and enhance the action side of the game. Think Returnal in movements, but not roquelike, but classic search action (metroidvania).

Unlike Other M though it would have full camera controll, not just 2 buttons and real 3D spaces.

Given the last game, who knows. I know people will jump on me instantly and argue it wasn't a flop... but it was a flop. I don't see how Nintendo will feel confident going in that direction again.

Prime needs to just die. They can make a 3d metroid that would make everyone completely forget about prime. It needs to 3rd person. Look at Returnal and imagine they made a high quality Metroid like that. Itd be the best shit.

Total Championships: Nintendo - 4, Sony - 2, Atari - 1, Microsoft - 0, Sega - 0

There are already rumors about Metroid Prime 5. I think it makes sense because this time, Retro Studios can take on the project right from the beginning and already have everything in place: the engine, assets, the people they need to hire, project planning, mistakes to be avoided, and difficulties to overcome.

I think it's wrong to assume that Nintendo judges its IPs purely from an economical perspective; diversity in their portfolio is a very important factor. Even if an iteration fails, they don't just kill the whole IP. Metroid Prime is a prestige series to them. It is highly praised for its graphics, gameplay, atmosphere, and sound. It's their only series that truly speaks to core gamers who favor realistic and serious games (in a sci-fi sense).

Just because Metroid Prime 4 was a financial flop, it doesn't automatically mean that Nintendo will kill off the series. This time around, they will keep the costs in check (as mentioned in my first paragraph).

A third person 3D Metroid could be cool, though it'd be very difficult to nail and you'd probably have to put an elite dev in charge to ensure it lived up to the name.

Personally though, gimme Prime 5 with incredible Switch 2 graphics and a more polished structure than 4.
