Given the last game, who knows. I know people will jump on me instantly and argue it wasn't a flop... but it was a flop. I don't see how Nintendo will feel confident going in that direction again.

I think everyone agrees that it was a commercial flop and that it underdelivered critically as well. I really hope it legs it out, as I am rooting for Retro, but you can buy it brand new these days for roughly 40$ and that is unheard for a Nintendo title.

I genuinely thought people would attack me. I said the same thing a week or two in, and that's what happened. Maybe I was just too soon lol

To somewhat echo what Leynos said: I believe that a 3D Metroid which takes on a radically different approach compared to the Prime subseries, which is able to better translate the snappy movement of 2D Metroid (as seen in Dread) into 3D, would be the best future for Metroid. Prime 4 showed to me that the formula as it currently stands is dated and it needs to be shaken up. If not for these shake ups, we never have gotten games like BotW, Mario Odyssey, or Metroid Dread.

"If not for these shake ups, we never have gotten games like BotW, Mario Odyssey, or Metroid Dread."...or Metroid Prime in the first place! Since first person Metroid Prime shocked everyone when it was unveiled.

The Prime series is obviously great, but by no means does it need to be just the way 3D Metroid is done. Like with 3D Mario big areas with stars became the standard formula with M64, but they also made two more linear level Galaxy games, as well as a straight up 2D-style get-to-the-flag levels game with 3D World, and so far experimented with open world design with Bowser's Fury.

I think it's time for them to end the Prime series and try out something new for Metroid. Prime was awesome, but after the crazy amount of years spent on Prime 4, and it still came out as the worst in the series and mostly considered a critical disappointment and presumably a pretty big financial disappointment, it's time they have a team experimenting with new styles for the next 3D Metroid.

I’d like a darker 3D Metroid with horror elements—a mix of Alien: Isolation, Dead Space, and BioShock.
