SpiderMan, God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, virtually every N64 and GCN game, and so on. They all run at 30FPS (and in some instances 20FPS) as they push the limits on what their respective hardware is capable of.

Meanwhile Splatoon Raiders, SpiderMan 2, God of War: Ragnörak, Yoshi & The Mysterious Book, and so forth. None of these games aim to be visually “next gen” yet maintain a rock-solid 4k 60FPS.

Which do you prefer? IMO I’ll take the something less visually stunning at a higher frame rate any day. 30FPS gives me a headache, it creates lag, and overall can ruin an experience.

I appreciate this thread, but I don't think the title and OP match up. This seems more like fidelity vs. performance, not so much fidelity vs. innovation.

If there's an option to choose between quality and performance modes, I will almost always opt for the latter. I'm fine taking a hit to graphics/lighting/textures if it means smoother, more reliable performance. That said, I don't agree that 30 fps is a problem. I think it's perfectly fine.

I'll also add that if the fundamentals of a game are great, then it can overcome some performance woes. If I had to choose between Ocarina of Time at 20 fps on N64 and Skyward Sword at 60 fps on Switch, I would pick Ocarina, because I prefer its design and art.

I see what you’re saying, but the purpose of this thread isn’t about whether you rock-steady 60FPS or a nice 4k resolution, it’s about whether you prefer to see games that push what their respective hardware is capable of to the point of needing lower FPS (20FPS in the case of OoT, 30FPS in the case of RDR2 as examples).

Hmm not sure how to convey this… let me see if this new title does a better job.

I like people having choice. Me personally, a higher framerate is the way to go 90% or more of the time. Well, hopefully it is rock solid and consistent. I tend to dislike dynamic 50-60 FPS options or similar things. Give me a locked 60 FPS or locked 30 FPS.
My current PC monitor is 120hz, but my specs won't let it hit much above 100hz and only for really simple games.
My PS5 supports 120hz obviously but I don't have any other 120hz displays and use it on a standard 60hz TV.

OK, I see now. 

That's more difficult to answer, because there are different ways to push the envelope. I wouldn't ask a developer to tank performance for extra strands of hair or volumetric lighting, but I wouldn't mind if they sacrificed performance (to a degree) for something that greatly enhances the way the player interacts with the game. Tears of the Kingdom is the perfect example. On Switch, it's 30 fps and 900p, yet it boasts some of the most mechanically and physically audacious gameplay of all time. To me, that is a good trade-off.



I prefer performance, but as the PS5 version of FFVII Rebirth taught me, if the performance mode has blurry AF image quality, I may end up opting to suffer through 30fps horror and end up being resentful.

That aside, I tend to have the view that performance and graphics are both part of a trio, with the third being resolution. Enhancing one can be detrimental to the other two.
Sadly, resolution and graphics are conflated in the realm of consoles. Historically, resolution is the first thing I bump down.

Anyway this fits my preference in VR:

"none of these games aim to be visually 'next gen' yet maintain a rock-solid 4k 60FPS" In VR it's a rock-solid 90 fps (or 120 fps) that I prefer, not looking next-gen. Hence I play on PSVR2 + PS5 Pro and stay away from unsteady games / PCVR for the best and steady performance. 

On flat it depends on what type of game it is. FS2020 I played at 20fps or lower to max out graphical fidelity. Any high paced games I reduce details to increase performance and aim for 60fps or higher. Resolution goes down as well with detail for performance. No point in having low detail 4K visuals. But also no point in high detail (sub) 1080p visuals, FS2020 I used super sampling to increase fidelity at the cost of performance.
