Games like Ocarina of Time, Shadow of the Colossus, and Tears of the Kingdom wouldn't have been possible on their hardware at high and stable framerate. So the answer is "it depends". It's all about what sacrificing high framerate is translating into.

In the modern era (on traditional home consoles), more often than not, sacrificing high fps isn't worth it, as the extra resources are used purely for "slightly or moderately higher settings". PS5 targeted 60fps as an option almost universally so far. GTA6 might be the first true exception, of course I'll need to play it before deciding whether or not 30fps was a necessary compromise and worth it.

Some really good responses here! Keep em coming. It’s definitely a discussion that I can be swayed both ways on: While I do enjoy myself some 60FPS Mario Wonder, would I rather that over a 30FPS BotW/TotK? Heck, my two favorite games of all time (BotW/TotK) were played only at 30FPS.

Thinking about it, for a platform like say Switch 1/2, 30fps was necessary for a lot of third party ports to be viable at all, so they would miss out on a lot if everything had to be 60fps or bust.

I'd rather play games like Indiana Jones, Cyberpunk, etc at 30fps than not at all or with severe compromises to allow 60fps.

There has to be a balance. Theres no point of fast frame rate if there is motion blur where you cant see image clearly. And no point of good graphics with choppy frames. There needs to be a balance of smooth gameplay and clarity
