Adding ads in games and locking ads-free versions behind higher subscription tiers could/would be the same for physical versions, wouldn't it.

Such forms of enshitification are not tied to the distribution method of the game data.
Even if played offline there could be some generic ads on the disc which are played instead of newer downloaded ads.

honestly this is what makes all the fearmongering in this thread so ridiculous: none of the potential issues brought up would have to be exclusive to digital only games.

It's baffling you think its even remotely comparable, even more that you call it fearmongering when paid digital content on Playstation has been already actually announced to be taken out from people accounts just days before the physical media announced, as its happening with the content from Studio Canal. It's not baseless fear, it's reality.

You have been constantly obnoxious when anything that involves Sony doing something bad and getting treated like so as a reaction happens, which is the actual ridiculous reaction from my POV.

Which, to anybody who doesn’t lack reading comprehension, means charging you to skip ads.

Why do I get the feeling all these people saying “I don’t care about Sony going digital only, I haven’t bought discs in years” will start caring once they see a “pay $X to skip ads” popup on their $1,000 PS6?

Except they can’t do it now because then they’ll just buy the cheaper physical versions without ads (people do still buy physical when the option is given, after all). With everything (and I do mean everything) on their console being tied to a digital storefront, they can literally paywall access to the PS store behind subscriptions and throw in ads or whatever intrusive moneysucking bullshit they like for the added “bonus” of paying to skip them (and getting paid to make them skip ads).

I mean, they did just lock their Crunchyroll store behind subscription paywalls, not at all crazy to think they’ll do this (in fact, I’m fully-expecting it). They already do this on streaming. If you don’t think Sony are looking at Prime Video randomly charging its users extra on top of their current subscription to not have to deal with annoying ads before and in the middle of movies and shows and are licking their chops, you don’t know corpos. They’re always looking at what other companies are doing to see what they can get away with, they did the same thing charging for PS4 online when people let MS get away with charging for XBL on the 360 (and the OG Xbox), it was free on the PS3, I remind you.

Sure they can add ads for every new physical release and also for older physical games with mandatory updates for multiplayer access.

They could also add the ads on a system level via firmware update. And if you don't update the firmware to the new version, you can play older games ad-free, but all new games (f. e. GTA6 or Wolverine) wouldn't run with the older firmwares.

Your dismissive attitude to critique of views you support is no different, tbqh. At the end of the day, the PS6 hasn't been announced. The details surrounding a digital only PS hasn't been announced.

If Sony and the PS6 end up being all your worst fears, then sure your fears are validated. You can go buy another console.

A lot of people who are digital only already understand the concept of a license and what that entails. And yet they've continued to remain digital. One can only hope that digital rights managements improve on that front. This is where you energy should be going rather than complaining about the lack of physical again.

But you are right about the license being revoked for the Studio Canal videos. I shouldn't have dismissed that.

What makes the physical situation especially funny is that some of us poor delulus had dreams about a fully backwards compatible PS6 that plays the entire glorious Playstation library from PS1 to PS5 🤡

It's amazing how many cards Sony could play and chose not to out of greed and stupidity. They forgot what it means to have good PR. Some of that is fueled by Microsoft's incredible incompetence (and greed) which turned Sony uber arrogant and complacent. But Steam and Nintendo exist, so they can't just do whatever they want without losing players.

The fact that they still didn't make a single comment on the continuous backlash astounds me. It's just one ridiculous thing after another, what even is going on? I'm honestly in disbelief. Crunchyroll doesn't have competition like Playstation does, so I'm not really concerned about an ad tier model or locking the store behind a subscription paywall unless Valve does it first (not happening), but what do I know? I didn't think them ditching discs so soon had a possibility higher than 1% and here we are!

While the part about things being added through the firmware are possible and real, the bolded part is illegal.

PS5 (and any other PS) discs actually come with the necessary firmware to run the game because of that. Even if the console has never ever connected to the internet, it will play the game if its on the disc.

Which also likely means, if its completely explicity written in the game case that the game contain ads, they can also make you see ads into an offline PS5, because you were informed about it (which you can still discover post purchase and return the disc if you don't like it).

Everything sony is doing is pointing to one direction and one direction only.

It's only going to get a lot worse.

From what i know isnt sony actively working on "monitizing" the user base even more then activily working on way to increase the userbase/make more money on a bigger userbass.

From what i know didnt sony already sort of say their working on a way to include "ads" in their games?/console.

Its NOT fearmongering

Its looking at the data what sony is doing.

Now does it aply to digital and physical i agree, that would prob be the case in term of adding ads.

And the ONLY way sony is going to get away with this is if people would say" ow well who cares!" Like you it seems.

You pay more, own nothing, gets less content and yet certain people remain loyal to sony.

Sony is not a god, their not untouchable, they can get bankrupt, they will come begging and crawling back IF we as gamers just simply,DONT SUPPORT THEM.

Sony not answering anyone is actually worse than the decision itself IMO. Not for you or me, but for them.

Their bet was waiting a bit for things to cool down and moving on, don't agree with it but I can see it being effective with some small repercution stuff, but it's clearly not the case and yet they are still just going to keep looking away from all the damage on their brand...

The thing is, that kind of behavior is no news to me, anyone that knows Playstation Brasil has gone throught this kind of stuff several times (specially during the PS3 days), but then again, we have never ever been a priority region to them.

Doing it on a worldwide scale on the very most criticized action I have ever seen a game company make is really just mindblowing, disbelief is the right word to describe how I see it as well. Can't see a single angle on how that makes sense for them.

Sure, if they hate money and don’t want people buying the game. If it’s tied to subscriptions, they can’t pick and choose. You either pay $80 annually to deal with intrusive ads on ALL your games (which would be more annoying than the ads you get on Prime Video) or you pay $100-$135 to not get ads on ALL your games. And that’s on top of the $60-70 purchase.

So yes, it would give them MORE control going digital-only, which is what this is really about at the end of the day.

Yeah I'm not convinced it is "fearmongering" to be worried about enshittification when we're already seeing it spread like the plague across most digital platforms, and in light of Sony's own moves recently like revoking digital movies and locking purchases behind a subscription on crunchyroll, as well as their public comments about wanting to further monetize their base.
