Adding ads in games and locking ads-free versions behind higher subscription tiers could/would be the same for physical versions, wouldn't it. Such forms of enshitification are not tied to the distribution method of the game data. |
Except they can’t do it now because then they’ll just buy the cheaper physical versions without ads (people do still buy physical when the option is given, after all). With everything (and I do mean everything) on their console being tied to a digital storefront, they can literally paywall access to the PS store behind subscriptions and throw in ads or whatever intrusive moneysucking bullshit they like for the added “bonus” of paying to skip them (and getting paid to make them skip ads).
I mean, they did just lock their Crunchyroll store behind subscription paywalls, not at all crazy to think they’ll do this (in fact, I’m fully-expecting it). They already do this on streaming. If you don’t think Sony are looking at Prime Video randomly charging its users extra on top of their current subscription to not have to deal with annoying ads before and in the middle of movies and shows and are licking their chops, you don’t know corpos. They’re always looking at what other companies are doing to see what they can get away with, they did the same thing charging for PS4 online when people let MS get away with charging for XBL on the 360 (and the OG Xbox), it was free on the PS3, I remind you.
