Forums - Sony - ITS OVER Sony Interactive Entertainment to end physical game disc production in January 2028

Now let me call up several Mom n' Pop physical game stores to ask them how many physical copies of PS4 and PS5 they sell so I can get a random polling number. Then let's add that to our already established 30% of PS customers preferring physical and see how much the number rises. And of course even if I did go through all that work polling 1000 games stores and extrapolating the data, people still wouldn't accept that as proof. Oh well.

Oh oh! One more post! Would you believe that I'm 50/50 between digital and physical on Nintendo Switch? Oh gee that must mean I'm not all that into having my games physically. But wait! I buy a boatload of Indie games and don't own a single AAA game digitally on Switch. Indie games are much cheaper so why not count the money I spent on physical games for Switch vs the money I spent for digital games on Switch? After all, I bought all my Switch games brand new. Your average Indie costs me $10 because I only buy them on sale and have a discount system worked out to save me 30% off the sale price. Meanwhile, AAA Switch games cost me at least $60. I bought 80 physical Switch games so that's $4800. And I bought 80 digital Switch games so that's $800. So 16% of my spending for Switch was digital games. So aren't I 84% digital by that metric?

Anybody want to dive into Sony's stupid financials and do the math to see just how much PS5 consumers are really spending to buy physical games vs how much they spend to buy digital games? Not revenue that Sony takes in. How much they actually spend. After all we're working out consumer preferences not Sony preferences here.

I can understand sony wanting to cut costs and make money, less losses. They increased the coat of games, evem on digital. Why not continue to make discs, and add the cost of production on top. Let consumers decide if they want to spend up to a $100 on a disc or more. Atleast give the option.

Yeah all anybody really wants is the ability to have a few games on disc until the PS5 is discontinued. PNP Games was the starter of the petition to save discs. They mostly sell Indie games in physical format. Why can't Sony print 5 million PS5 discs per year to satisfy the hardcore collector crowd?

I trust the market. It will find a way to ensure physical will still be a thing. People want it, so someone will figure things out because there is money on the table. See the resurgence of vinyl as example.

Sadly, because they simply don't care.

If increasing their profit margins on every game they sell going forwards loses them say 5% of their audience, they simply do the math and figure it's a worthwhile sacrifice.

It sucks, but that's the reality of corporations, their bottom line is all that matters, customers be damned.

This might work for PlayStation. But does it work for Sony DADC?

Tober is correct, and I have been saying this same thing since 2012 when everyone in my personal life was talking about an all digital future. As long as there is a demand, it will be supplied. There are no two ways about it. Just because Sony is making this decision, honestly it doesn't mean shit. They are one company (albeit a big one) and there are two other console manufacturers out there. Sony doesn't dictate when the generation starts, nor do they dictate the standard for distribution. Everyone acts like since Sony did this, physical games are dead. Sony isn't the industry. They barely even make games anymore. All they care about is trying to sign you up for services. They aren't even really interested in gaming anymore.

Anyway, I believe physical media will always find a way. Too many people like it.

Could be that he's selling high after stocks went up with the announcement of physical being discontinued, but before something like the announcement of another price hike or low hardware sales brings stock back down.

This was my first thought. I'm guessing the CEO is thinking 1 of 2 things is going to happen:

1. The verbal revolt will be so massive that PS will have no choice but to backtrack to some degree, leading to the stock price dropping somewhat.

2. The revolt just may become financial and gamers will speak with their wallets, leading to the stock price dropping a considerable amount.

Either outcome means if he wants to cash out to some degree, now is a good time.

It's also very well possible, as you've stated, that there may be unrelated bad news on the way bringing the stock price down even further.

To me, it's a good sign though. If the CEO was worried from the beginning, I'd say there's a good chance of a partial or full backtrack.

It's possible SNY thinks the amount extra that they would 'have' to charge would be too much and that (physical) gamers would freak out about it.

In that case, this move could make perfect sense from another angle. Pretend to take away physical to get (those) gamers to show how badly they want it to continue, and then do a (partial) reversal after a while (so it doesn't seem planned), and explain if they're going to continue making discs, that the physical game prices need to rise.

This would make me assume it's not just $10 more per copy. I'd say at least $20-$25 more per copy if not higher.

If SNY initially came out and said physical game prices are going up $25 per copy (or more) then it would look really bad on them, especially with everything (negative) going on recently. This way SNY would kinda seem like a good guy, or at least less of a bad guy, for keeping physical going against their interests. Sort of another "for the players" move. Especially if XB is going full digital with Helix.
