Yeah, I also looked it up and edited my post.

Sony financials do state that digital game revenues and units are based on titles 'sold via the Playstation Store'. Network Services is a completely separate number they record.

I'm not sure why digital-only indies and limited physical releases wouldn't be included. That doesn't make sense for a financials document. If anything, the fact that there are more games available digital rather than physical shows that digital is the preferable delivery medium is preferable for devs/ publishers.

Also what are your thoughts on Capcom posting that 80% of their console sales are digital, and that that number increases to 93% when PC is included?

I'm the one that dropped Jason's video here, where he explains all this.

Digital-Only games and Limited Releases shouldn't be included in a statement about consumer preferences because these two often aren't a matter of choice. It's only a choice to choose between physical and digital when both are readily available.

A lot of Capcom games like fighting games and Monster Hunter are more live-service than traditional videogames. So buying them physically is pretty pointless unless you wait for the Super Ultra Turbo SF6 Edition released in 2030. Things like CoD, MMOs, Splatoon, Animal Crossing, etc. will naturally have lower physical sales numbers because of the excessive updates and patches. Animal Crossing for example is a completely different game after all the free updates and paid DLC.

Remember when we got Goty editions that were fully on disk? Pepperidge farm remembers!

Whether digital only games and limited physical media was included as an underlying reason for the statement is impossible to know, right?

This is very much you reading more into the statement than was actually presented. All Sony said was that there was a general preference for digital over physical discs, a general preference which you appear to prove by trying to 'but this is different' Capcom's high digital to physical ratio.

You seem to think that Sony's financials are the only data Sony has to make this decision, which is quite absurd.

If you really think Sony is lying about there being a preference for digital media, then where's the most up-to-date data to support this?

Damn! Isnt that ilegal? Like trading with insight knowledge?

OR he sees the storm brewing and thinks"iam outa here"

No, he sold AFTER they made the announcement. There's no inside trading involved. Typically after a negative news cycle and bad PR the stock goes down. In this instance shares went up 2 days later because the share holders were happy even with the negative PR world wide. He sold when shares were higher which is what you're supposed to do if you want money. Didn't video games ever teach you that?  buy low and sell high?

Sony stock is still a bit lower then it was last year if i remember correctly? Soo he is just selling to get the hell out of there hahaha i did to.

Sony's 2025 financials statement literally says that it includes all game sales. Not that hard to realize they are counting digital-only and limited release titles.

Sony, like Microsoft will only release data that makes them look good. At least for now. MS constantly said that Gamepass was profitable. But now Sharma has said that they lost 64 cents for every dollar invested during their aquisition spree. This is after 7 years of claiming that Gamepass was profitable mind you. Corporations stretch the truth all the time in order to tell whatever narrative they want. z

Another example of how corporations can stretch the truth: MS renamed XBoxLive to GamepassCore. This is so they can claim that there are more Game Pass users than there are. People subbing to basic XBL for Online and people subbing to Gamepass are two different things. But MS wants to treat them as the same thing because it looks better on a spreadsheet. Sony is doing the same thing when it comes to digital vs physical preferences for consumers.

Thanks all.  I saw a meme about the CEO selling half his stock and wasn't sure if it was true.  I wasn't sure on the timing (pre / post announcement) either.

I sure hope investors are being tone-deaf here (stock going up 6%).  I wonder if some of them saw the digital pre-sales of GTA 6 and conflated digital = good.  I understand digital is more profitable for Sony.  That is unless this backlash lasts and consumers shun the PS6 and digital software when they have a choice between digital / physical. Personally I am hoping for that outcome but am very pessimistic.  Some will hold a grudge for the next 18 months, many I am afraid will come to terms with it or forget ...

I do think it is time to drop my PS+, I barely use it anyway and it would help to send a message by finally cancelling my auto-renew.

Edit- LOL

Just cancelled my PS+ and they did offer 25% off if I changed my mind but when asking why I am cancelling the only options are:

I'm not using online multiplayer

I'm not happy with the monthly games

I'm trying to save

The fact there is no "other" option where they prompt for specific feedback is not the norm in my limited experience

Something I never even considered is how incomplete so many players' physical PS5 libraries will be.

We saw how long cross-gen has been carried this gen. Hell, there's still some PS4 games being made to this day nearly 6 years in. Can you imagine how long cross-gen will be for the PS6 era? May even last closer to the PS7 launch. That's going to be years worth of new PS5 games that will never get physically released. Which is sad to see for so many who love building up their physical libraries.

Funny in my latest video i predicted that there will be no single "genn" defining exclusive on the ps6 becauze sony will keep making the games for ps5/ps6.

Nobody is forced to boycott what they don't want to. Neither your gf nor anyone wanting any game are doing anything wrong, Sony is.

That being said, them shadow dropping those at 50% for PS Plus subscribers is clearly a move to test people, they have very hardly if ever done something like that.

Fuck you, Sony. Cowards.

I honestly thought they would reverse the decision or something of that nature by now. It is actually insane that they are going through with this. PS5 will be the last Playstation console for me because physical games is a big reason why I still buy consoles.
