Forums - Sony - ITS OVER Sony Interactive Entertainment to end physical game disc production in January 2028

Well, this news is gonna start to become a thing of the past after Xbox layoffs start tomorrow. From what the leaks have been, they’re going to be pretty devastating.

Seamus Blackley just posted “holy shit. That’s all. Holy shit” timing of a post like that can only mean one thing.

Sony is very likely expecting those news to go back to posting random stuff on their social media as if nothing ever happened.

It's another massive bad news, it should get the attention it deserves as well, but not take the physical media subject away from Playstation.

Sadly it's so many bad news all the time that it's hard to have the energy to keep up with all of them as well, tho.

I would say, I hope the majority of people that’ll hurl threats towards to social media team know that they had zero involvement in Sonys decision but then I realised this is the internet.

It feels like a competition of who can be worse with no end in sight.

Sony announcement about the death of physical media on Playstation has surprased in less than 1 week the amount of views from the announcement of the first trailer for GTA VI, which has gotten views for over 2 and a half years up until now.

Nobody cares about physical media, am I right, Sony?

Lol I fucking told you so! They’re doing this so they can add in-game ads and charge higher-priced subscriptions to skip them like Prime Video now does. All in an effort to squeeze more money out of people buying leases on their games that they can swipe from them at any time for any reason.

And even if they don’t (which I’d be surprised if they don’t do this or anything similarly-shady), jacking up the PS+ prices is already bad enough by itself which we tried to warn the all-digital crowd they would push on us with an all-digital future and they told us to “GeT wItH tHe TiMeZ!” Or “who cares? It doesn’t affect me, I don’t buy discs”. Well, now do you care?

It’s almost like companies having a marketshare monopoly is bad for consumers.

I would hope that most of the people who applied and accepted a position on the SNY PS social media team were smart and aware enough to know that they would have to deal with moments like this from time to time. Work isn't always positive and fun.

Considering the silence, they're getting off pretty easy as far as I'm concerned. They could instead be replying and digging an even deeper hole.

He is right, but i think he misses 1 verry important detail, if the ps6/helix will be 1k+(and only will get more expensive later on) most first years sales would be from the diehard gamers (and rich people) and most of those gamers i suspect are people like me who loves to collect videogames physical.

I may be mistaken and time will tell but sony is going to have a VERRY difficult time selling a 1k+ ps6 to family's and they will struggle even further with there loyal fanbase.

Iam a loser who cant even spell normally and i read the room and see quit clear ps6 is going to be a disaster.

Whatever sony' vision is for ps, i a fan since 1996 won't be a part of.

This is a great point.

The hardcore fans buy in asap and are typically what helps launch the console in the early years to success. If it's worthy of success that is...

If SNY can't get these diehard fans to bite on a very expensive PS6 handheld and console, then PS3 is going to seem like the good old days.

Offering some type of physical medium would seem like a must, unless SNY has something else up their sleeve that can offset the loss.

I personally have no idea what that something else could be.

With how short people's attention spans are nowadays and with bad industry news hitting constantly, Sony are probably betting that the outrage will be short-lived and that a few months now everyone will have moved on and stopped caring.

Timing this announcement just days after GTA6 moved 30 million preorders without a disc release was also rather cunning; if people put their money where their mouth is now, they'll have to miss out on the biggest game release in history, or just admit they don't really care THAT much.

People aren't serious otherwise they would unsubscribe from their PS+ as protest, boycott wolverine as protest...

Instead I've heard people simply say I'm going to buy the game physically lol. I mean I get the logic but you really gotta hit Sony hard & now... Not in 2028

Ironically I unsubscribed from PS+ when they rised the playstation 5 price in April because it felt greedy but in hindsight they weren't just being greedy, RAM prices are genuinely increasing at an insane rate and they'll probably be selling at a loss again within a year.

Making SNY pay attention now would hopefully save time, but having SNY set themselves up for an XB1 reveal and reaction would be far funnier. If after all this time they once again proved the 3rd console curse isn't just myth, would be gut busting. Kinda scary at the same time, but still more funny.

A 10th gen XB1 level failure with PS6 is the kind of situation that not only would cause SNY to go back to a PS4 type mindset, but they would be forced to do so far more quickly than MS did. Like cut 10th gen short and move on to 11th gen 4 years later. If they didn't, and just decided to milk their customers throughout a 7-8 year generation, they'd just end up in the same situation as XB Series S/X is now, so an even worse 11th gen in that case.

To me, those suggesting that you go out and buy all the physical you can to prove to SNY they should reverse course, are wrong. SNY will just pocket that money. You have to do something like you're suggesting, where you refuse to give SNY your money. They need to see profits drop, so much so their stocks drop, so their investors get upset. Then SNY will seriously think about reversing course or doing something else to ensure physical software is an option.

I don't quite get the last post. I feel like there are two approaches Sony could take. It could go for accessibility and convenience by making a digital-only console that's so cheap and easy that consumers are willing to sacrifice the security/flexibility of physical. Or it could go for an enthusiast machine where physical games are sold at a premium, hoping collectors and diehard fans pay for the privilege.

A $1,000+ console that's digital only is the worst of both these worlds. Who would be lining up for that?

Yes, but based on SNY and their launch base console and then mid gen Pro console, I don't see why they just can't or wouldn't do both.

Launch both an affordable unit and an enthusiast unit. The only difference would be that you don't have to wait until mid gen for the Pro.

If SNY can't justify discs at the sales price now, then add $10 to the cost of discs MSRP. Maybe it needs to be $20 extra, I dunno.

Either that, or if there's another type of physical media they can offer games on for cheaper, then great, do that instead.

Also, keep making a disc drive add on for BC. Charge whatever you need to charge to make it worth it.
