What are microlenses good for? Can they be used for gaming hardware in any way? I don't know enough about them.

If iam correct those are for camera's (maybe for phones etc and security cams?)

Then Sony might as well abandon making consoles altogether.

Digital only PlayStation. Pah!!

I, too, was once a console gamer.

The root problem is copyright.
Physical media is just digital media on a disk.
On PC if you want physical games, you can just buy a cd and burn your game on it, unless the game has DRM.
But you can buy games on GoG with no DRM and burn them, except you can’t because DRM just enforces End User Liscence Agreements. You’ve agreed to the EULA, so the game still isn’t yours.
The problem is fundamentally that software is non-rivalrous, meaning it’s scarcity is artificial.

The reason you can’t own your digital games is because it’s scouts honor that you won’t just easily copy them infinitely and distribute them for free. It’s copyright that’s the problem. Games have a marginal cost of reproduction of 0. In a free market, the price of a good tends towards its marginal cost, meaning that in a free market, games would be free, but if games are free, no one makes money on making games.

Then the only game ever made would be indie passion projects and fans games.

Lol Itsluke7 made a GREAT video on this (I can’t find a way to embed it anywhere, sorry).

“If buying isn’t owning, then piracy isn’t stealing” ROFLMAO!

And the funny thing is, no matter how much corpo bootlickers on Reddit try to argue otherwise:

He’s right.

If I don’t own the thing I bought from you, you can’t really say with a straight face I’m “stealing” it if I download without paying like these “You Wouldn’t Steal A Car” commercials (and said bootlickers) try to argue. They can’t have their cake and eat it, too. You also can’t steal what you can’t own in the first place.

Oh, and in other news, Rockstar wants nothing to do with Sony after this. They won’t even let them run GTAVI advertising on their app.

“When Rockstar doesn’t want to be associated with your decision you know it’s bad”. Lol also QFT.

But yeah, enjoy your (perpetual) $80 games being padded behind $100 ads-free versions if you want to play without ads (they already do this with movies and shows on streaming, so don’t act like it won’t happen) until they snag them from you. And goodbye licensed games, which means goodbye future console gens for me. It had to end at some point. I refuse to have my gaming library be left at the mercy of a company that fudges sales numbers to justify snagging ownership from me. That’s a gaming future I refuse to be apart of.

Agree. They are in a very very bad position.

Looking back, they never should've launched PS5 Pro (which I called back then), and they should've designed PS5 to be $399 (which I believe was their original design plan at around 8TF). Their PS5 sales would be very similar and they'd have plenty of room to maneuver with PS6. Hindsight. 20/20.

Hard disagree with PS5 Pro. Getting PSSR out for wider testing from consumers and getting publishers onboard with it as a default for next gen are pivotal steps for PS6 and the PS6 handheld. PSSR is going to be very important tech for Sony next gen.

In this scenario, with a PS5 only gen, no Pro model, PS6 should've launched no later than holiday 2026. It would have PSSR, which likely would've been closer to what PSSR2 is rather than what PSSR1 was because of FSR4.

Then if SNY wanted to improve PSSR a bit, they could've on PS6, and could then advance it well beyond what PS6 could do, with a PS6 Pro. Both consoles in the same gen using PSSR to their advantage, unlike this gen with PS5. That or SNY could've done another 5-6 yr gen and moved on to PS7.

Since PS6 could be in the ballpark of PS5 Pro specs in this case, give or take, since PS5 Pro never existed, the PS6 launch price could actually be somewhat reasonable holiday 2026 because SNY would've locked in RAM and SSD prices about a year ago already.

This is actually what I suggested SNY should do back when PS5 Pro leaks were being talked about. While I didn't know the RAMPOCALYPSE was coming, it didn't need to happen to be a worthy idea. Go back to a slightly shorter gen with a single SKU (no Pro) and move on to PS6 by 2026.

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PRO  -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.

Sony's stupidity is gonna cause a rise in piracy, mark my words.

Holy shit once in a blue moon my brain works and it wispered to me something i didnt think about.

Sony want to monotize gaming with ads.
For example:
For a 80$game you willl see every hour a 60sec add(or for example when you boot up the game)
BUT if you pay 90$you will get the game add free
OR for a monthly fee(hi music and movies) you will have ad free gaming.

I will die laughing if this will be true.

FOR THE REAL PLAYERS,PAY UP.

I’m still genuinely shocked at the timing. 22% of the console base buying physical still is no chump figure. That’s still millions of players.

I figured we still had at least 1 more generation of physical with the PS6’s disc drive being what the PS5’s is now. Technically optional.

What a bandaid rip.

I don't believe 22% of the userbase. It's 22% of games sold. If physical consumers are 100% (or close to) physical, then the actual percentage users affected is far lower. But this is a difficult stat to get I think.

Its more than that. 82% of PS5s sold are the ones with a disc drive. Even the 18% digital consoles arent even accurate since people buy the disc drive add-on. So it could be like 10% of all PS5 owners have a digital only console. Thats like 9-10 million gamers.

Wouldn't this suggest that users with a disc version of the PS5 are also buying, perhaps exclusively, digital games? Just because someone has a disc PS5 doesn't mean that their buying habits haven't changed as the gen has gone on. 22% of all game units being physical is like a complete reversal of what it was around 10 years ago.

Sounds like that is that then. The decision seems to have been maybe 2 years in the making. With the need for physical discs dying, at least the employees at the plant aren't losing their jobs (it appears) as they move to microlenses.

One suggestion from the factory was car lights. It's used for anything that bends light. If I am not wrong, they're able to repurpose parts of the factory and have the lens made on discs, or at least disc shaped items.

I don't think there's every been a suggestion that Sony would launch the PS6 so soon. I mean, yes they could've just launched PSSR with PS6 and still see upgrades.

But with PS5 Pro, they're doing that on an earlier timeline.

Sure, but it could also mean that they like having the option to buy physical games or borrow games from friends. If 78% of gamers on Playstation are truly digital only, then why are most gamers still to this day buying the more expensive disc version?

I'm just some nobody throwing sh*t at a wall on a gaming sales site, so why that would ever translate to SNY doing what I think I dunno. Then again, I did totally suggest MS should do the two tier console strategy well before leaks came out about Series S, and pretty much everyone thought it was a really stupid idea and that MS would never do it.

PS5 Pro won't be seen as a bad move if SNY has an affordable PS6 (model). If they don't, and both the PS6 handheld and console are expensive, then SNY definitely shouldn't have launched PS5 Pro and should've made 9th gen shorter.

This is a very good point, and I agree that it appears to suggest that users who want digital only are a minority audience. But whether disc based PS5 owners are actually using physical media is hard to gauge without buying/ use habits.

Since digital sales represent closed to 80% of all sales, the amount of physical only gamers are presumably quite low. But yeah, it's a valid point.

There's been some suggestion of a PS6-lite device. Whether that's from credible readings of hardware components or not I am unsure. Though at this point, who knows what an affordable version of a console is priced at.
