BTW, there's a couple of things I saw on Twitter that I hadn't previosuly considered:

1. By eliminating physical games and only leaving them available digitally on PS Store, it will increasingly become more difficult to dump and preserve said games.

2. You won't be able to play games not available on your region. Now you can import a physical copy of said game. In an all digital future, this will not be possible.

Yes! I think that there are several more implications regarding getting rid of physical media completely.

I also think that there will be changes to the the digital games so that people who never even buy physical media will notice the difference. Region based pricing might ramp up, less incentives for developers to keep game-size low ect.

Neither of these are really correct.

Modern console games get dumped by the console getting hacked, once the console has been exploited it doesn't matter if the game is digital or physical they can be dumped.

You can play digital games from other regions now, all you need to do is create a second account for that region. I used to buy digital games on different region PSN accounts to get cheaper prices. You can play the games on your original local account for achievements etc if the foreign account sets the console to primary.

Actually, even as people can and do make multiple regional accounts, I'm not sure it is actually allowed by Sony.

If it isn't, but they just currently don't care about it, but eventually do, if they get you buying games from different regions they could ban your account.

And what does a banned account means in an all digital future? You lose your entire library tied to it =D

People better not get hacked or not have other people fooling support chat and getting access to their accounts without ever even needing to hack them, both things that have happened and still happen, because they will lose all their games they already not own too. PSN is very secure as we all know... not.

It only gets better and better.

Domino's got beef with SNY or something? First GoW Laufey and now digital only games?

They maybe should've gone with virtual pizza boxes, since you can still buy and play the games, just no physical media storing it.

'Domino's will no longer sell pizza in boxes' would be more fitting I think.

'You can carry the entire pie from now on because who needs a box!'

'Hopefully nobody hacks your pie...'

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PRO  -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.

Nobody would be stupid enough to sell digital only pizza. Except John Schnatter, but he was basically fired from his own company.

Dont want to sound like a broken record but iam still both shocked/angry and sad about the news of yesterday, trueout my life starting gaming around 6 or 7 on my dads atari 2600 and becoming passionate about it when he got the playstation1 i have been a ps fan and fan of gaming in general.

I know for many its just a piece of plastic, but for me and i KNOW for many, its the history behind the games, its the joy of your dad comming home with final fantasy 9 and jumping true the roof of excitment to play the newest ff!

Its the joy of going with friends on a sunday morning to the city to visisting all the gaming shops(rip futurezone)

Its that funny warm almost in love feeling traveling back home with your newest bought game, fantasizing how great its going to be(on of my best memories is with DMC3 on ps2)

Its the joy of hype and fun you had with a game(or still have!) When you look in your game collection.

Music has cds and and lps and music concerts.
Movies have cinema'a and dvds(BR etc)
Sports have events and (how you call that when you go to a sport even to see them play live?)

And gaming, gaming has E3,it has physical it has midnight releases waiting it lines to play the newest games,
Its all gone now all of it.

I feel sorry for the kids growing up in a lame, boring non physical gaming world,NEVER will they know any of the joys we had as kids/teenagers or adults.

I feel betrayed by a company i supported so much trueout my life.
Fuck sony! They lost a lifetime fan.

I trust the market. It will find a way to ensure physical will still be a thing. People want it, so someone will figure things out because there is money on the table. See the resurgence of vinyl as example.
