Do you remember that feeling of buying a new game during the 5th and 6th console generation and not only getting a cool box but also a lovingly crafted manual? It was part of the experience, part of the charm.

I bought Terminator 2D: No Fate collector's edition earlier this year for Switch, and it really felt like being back in the 90's, not only because of the T2 theme and the game's style (sidescroller; limited continues, use them up and you start back in level 1) and pixel art, but because of the proper manual that came with the game (everything explained in detail, like back then when there were no in-game tutorials). Ah, that was great. Has a place on my personal GOTY list for the overall experience alone.

Sony should just copy Nintendo. Put a card slot (or even 2) in the PS6. Sell people game-key cards at the normal price or "entire game on card" for $10 extra.

Tbh in a digital only future this is true. I wonder if NFC could also work instead of actual card slot. To some extent a discless future was always inevitable and I'm interested in what novel ways "physical" collections could be kept interesting.

I don't even know what to say. Can't wrap my head around it yet. I love to buy physical. It was part of the experience, part of the charm. I understand why manuals got scrapped, but renouncing physical games completely? Still can't wrap my head around it.

You mention the box, but how important is the actual disk in what you're describing? Sony have already stated they'll work with retailers for in-retailer purchases. So possibly they'll do boxes with codes, or something else entirely. Will only know when the PS6 arrives I reckon.

To me and i think many others, physical games are a part of the gaming culture, its like taking away music concerts, its a part of it!

I think a lot of people haven't really thought too much about this. It's often all about consumer rights, money and all that. But we (myself included) often forget about the cultural and social aspects of our hobby. This "gaming" culture, which includes everything from the actual games themselves to how we incorporate gaming in our lifes, defines us not only as players, but as people. And deleting physical media from the equation takes away a huge part of our identity.

Even people that have been "fully digital" for a while will be affected by this. Because even if they don't buy physical games, the existance of physical gaming shapes their own ecosystem as well to a certain degree. Things will change for them as well, both as consumers and as players. They just don't want to see it.

Considering I try to buy every game that actually matters to me on physical media, the disc or card is quite important to me. Just last week I payed a premium for Star Fox to get the physical version and I'm fine with games being $/€10 more expensive for a (proper) physical version.

Edit: I also bought the physical version of Disney Afternoon Collection for Switch 2 last month, even though it was twice as expensive as the digital version.

I dress in cyberpunk all black clothes. Usually black and red. Dog tag is black and red and I like the skull logo. I am my weird self and if people got issues with that. Fuck em. I gotta be me.

It's really funny how ahead of the industry Nintendo is.

NVidia + ARM + SDcard/SSD storage

Nintendo was already doing modern hardware in 2017, Sony and Microsoft still haven't caught up, almost 10 years later.

Why the heck is there no NVidia + ARM + SDcard/SSD console from Microsoft. Should be obvious.

Except Nintendo going with ARM+nVidia has nothing to do with how "modern" hardware is.

Choice of vendor comes down to realities of product requirements they are making and offerings/pricing from hardware manufacturers at that point. For Nintendo it made sense to go with that combo, since they needed reasonable low power solution for Switch (which was at the time nVidia Tegra X1, trying to make it in phone/tablet market). Sony/MS built 8th gen around most reasonable combo for their needs (home consoles), which was AMD for their integration of x86 CPU with good GPUs at low prices, they carried on with that in 9th gen, and will be going on with that in 10th gen as well, both for power, backward compatibility, and pricing, with latest hardware from AMD.

This is such a bizarre take. Both the Switch and Switch 2 used old tech by the time they released.

The Switch 2 released in 2025 and used a graphics architecture from 2020.

The PS5/XBS launched in 2020 and used a graphics architecture from 2020.

The Switch 2 internal storage is far slower than the PS5 and a little slower than the Xbox Series. It uses UFS 3.1 when UFS 4.0 launched in 2022.

The Switch 2 also uses a less advanced node than the five years older PS5/XBS.

Sure Nvidia is great and all but really... It's crazy to suggest Nintendo are closer to the cutting edge than Sony/MS hardware. They are using old tech for everything.
