Mostly agreed OP, but if anything Nintendo is starting to improve the S2.
Last year was a joke - a Mario Kart that it seems sorta failed to be the reinvention/upgrade that it looked like when they announced it, a Switch1 Metroid game port that apparently is considered a little lackluster or at least a couple bad decisions were made with the bike/desert, a complete joke of a pokemon game that comes off as and looks like a rejected gamecube game, the only bright spots were a well regarded DK and a niche Kirby racing game.
This year sure is mostly new AA games, spinoffs that seem to be side games rather than new meaty experiences, remakes, and ports. And yeah the main game of the year, OoT, is just a remake, though I'd say it's gotta be the most anticipated remake of any remake Nintendo could possibly make.
Yes the year comes off as a weak in terms of people wanting actual new AAA games and not remakes and side games, but it's way better than what Nintendo had last year for the most hyped console launch in history. So it is a step in the right direction, but yeah that step is being taken after faceplanting last year, so really it's more like stumbling back to their feet. The direct was literally the first time I've felt any interest in the S2 since the April reveal last year when DK came on instead of Mario and then out of embarrassment Nintendo didn't even mention how awful the prices of everything were going to be this gen.
It's been clear since last April that Nintendo thinks they can just run off Switch-successor hype. Because if they actually were trying to prove to consumers that they are the best damn video game option they'd have had a heck of a lot more last year and more than AA and remakes this year. I think it's all just very poor planning with them thinking they can rest on their laurels this gen after the Switch's success. And it's not like they didn't have years and years to prepare big new games for year 1 and 2 of this gen.
It is certainly concerning, feels like Nintendo stepped off a cliff this gen, but still 2026 is at least gonna be a more impressive showing than 2025 for them. In 2027 we'll probably start to see the first new AAA next gen games first party games on the system since the launch period (MKW and DKB), which granted is crazy when you realize that haha.
So what am I saying...yeah Nintendo sucks in the Switch 2 age, there is no arguing that. But that's been obvious for 14 months now. MKW and MP4 shoulda been better I guess, 3D Mario should have been out on launch day, Pokemon Z-A should have been something a lot more than a zero-effort disgraceful embarrassment, Star Fox should be a new game not a remake of an N64 game...all that at the bare minimum. But if anything they are improving now with what seems to be a mediocre 2026 at least in terms of first party / exclusive content (third party looks real solid), and a remake that's gonna be their biggest game since 3 years ago, so that's something at least.
