Forums - Nintendo - about this "zelda game" and nintendo's 2026 lineup in general

It might not be your personal cup of tea, but im pretty sure theres is a large portion of Nintendo fans who will see the OoT release as a bigger deal than anything they released in last year's holiday lineup, and certainly not a "supporting release" as you are putting it.

oh yes i know they view it that way. im saying it shouldnt be viewed that way. lol. i know thats going to trigger the hell out of the majority of the people who read this, but its my opinion so theyre just going to have to deal with the fact that i think that.

look, ocarina of time remake looks great. i think its amazing. ill certainly play it. i just think its really weak that nintendo's big title for the first full year of its new system is a remake. the title they are deciding to position as their big holiday release, that theyre going to hype up, is a remake. again it just doesnt sit right with me. i disagree with it.

Thats fair enough. This gen has been very remake heavy.

I haven't read to the bottom of the thread yet so someone may have already speculated this.

Thinking of Starfox and Zelda specifically what if these games are really Nintendo creating new engines for new games in these series?  Build and test the engine with a known element a game they know worked on previous hardware.  Save the new games for mid console life-cycle momentum fuel.

you know what, ive thought about this exact thing. from where we currently stand, i feel like this is the best we can hope for. but usually this is done the other way around. you come up with this great art style and engine to make a brand new awesome game, and then you reuse it to make something cool like a star fox 64 or OoT remake. thats part of my problem, is that they did this backwards.

Dunno why my reply didnt show up.

Regardless, since this was just a rant i guess ok. You do you. I guess i didnt get that from your OP,  your wording did not come off as you are describing it now.

Horrible analogy but, I could see them trying to run a Coke and New Coke flavor concurrently, especially with the longer Dev cycles.  Appease the fans of the classic flavor (formula) with the OOT engine / formula and cater to the millions of new fans they captured with the current BotW / TotK formula.  After the series grew with the last 2 entries I can't see them pulling too far away from it.  This would also allow them, in theory, to put out a new Zelda every 4 years or so with up to 8 year dev cycles for each flavor.

(Not a horrible analogy btw, that makes perfect sense to me.) If Nintendo's thinking of doing this with Zelda though, that would legitimately be the greatest Nintendo news to have dropped in the nine years I've been following them. Traditional AND open air 3D Zelda coexisting with new releases complementing each other every four years? Oh man! Wow that would be awesome!!

This is what I want for Zelda, Mario, Pokemon and Metroid.

New 3D entry > New 2D entry > remake of decades old entry > repeat

nintendo isnt going to stick with the same art style for zelda indefinitely. i expect this art style that was used for botw and totk to be put to rest, just based on their history. but who knows. this last pair of zeldas sold like 50 million units or something? maybe thatll change their minds.

I don't think you are wrong. When I was saying flavor / formula I am not talking art style, I am talking about game style.  So the newer open world approach of BotW / TotK vs the majority of the the Zelda's that came before with the exception of the original.

It is not unheard of for them to use the same game engine in back to back titles though so you may get 2 entries in a row with the same or similar art styles and assets.

yeah i agree, the art style and game style i think are kind of like a package deal. my expectation is that they will scale the game back tremendously and go a completely different direction. but again, the last games they made sold a ridiculous amount, so maybe itll change their calculation.
