Forums - Gaming - Gen AI Used In Making Crazy Taxi World Tour

100% of video games, other than a tiny few (likely indy) games that decide to make "no AI" a specific selling point, will be (and already are) utilizing generative AI in development. Every single one.

AI is here. It is now being used for everything. The store you bought your console or PC at is using it. The manufacturers of your gaming devices use it. The restaurant you ate lunch at is using it. Everyone needs to come to terms with this reality.

Right now it is a real pain to use coding agents to help code in most game engines, especially Unreal Engine. Once that changes (which it almost certainly will, sooner rather than later, especially because Epic wants to retain its near-monopoly) what you say here will most likely be true. Ironically, Godot has the best AI agent support currently, which isn't surprising given that its main scripting language is Python-like and you don't have to deal with header files.

As a Machine Learning Engineer I use coding agents daily. It's very rare that I manually write code on the job anymore, and instead most of my work is at the top-level design (designing business-relevant semantic models, hyper-parameter optimization, data engineering tasks, building optimization simulations, feature engineering, designing reports for results with Streamlit, Dash, or PowerBI, etc.) I am working on a personal project in UE5 though (not a game, but an explorable world.) Trying to use coding agents with UE5, requires a lot of setup that isn't really worth it, and you're mostly limited to C++, with most developers using blueprints/the node-based GUI instead of C++ from what I gather.

As for the use of AI for asset generation, I think that is still hard to do well beyond placeholder assets and concept art. Image generator models are still very much a slot machine in their output. I think that will change once we get more physically-constrained world models, but those are still emerging.

So I wouldn't be surprised if many game companies only use AI in very minor ways currently, given the current state of things. But that is almost certainly going to change, very soon.

Edit: Ah, just looked it up. Looks like "very soon" is literally today.

Capitalism isn't just the multi-national corporations. It is also the state which creates the legal and ethical frameworks which perpetuate their existence and dominance. It is intellectual property, and exclusionary real property laws. It is naval forces that keep global markets open, and secret police that depose divergent polities. It's the centrally controlled monetary and fiscal systems. It's not just authoritarian states that do this either. Almost every European state, as an example, has legal frameworks that perpetuate and depend upon the capitalist system. It's a fundamental characteristic of the state, and you can't disentangle the two. That's why your second paragraph is even less likely to happen than capitalism being displaced (an already nearly unexpected event.) States have as much invested in AI and data-centers as the large multi-nationals in the same way 19th century states had as much invested in railroads and factories as the robber barons. The idea that the proletariat could capture the state through their enfranchisement and bring about socialism/post-capitalism failed its test in the 20th century, when almost all of the gains of the early half of that century were reversed in the second half in most countries.

Oh, I'm well aware that the state enables capital. They have a nice, comfortable relationship with each other. Businesses donate to politicians, politicians pass laws favorable to businesses at the expense of the people. Rinse and repeat so that the wheels stay greased. The entire system is rotten to the core and needs to be replaced. Otherwise, we're completely screwed as a species in the long run. The capitalist class and their state allies will abuse this new technology to the detriment of us all.

A post-labor, post-scarcity world would be great, but that kind of tech utopia absolutely cannot happen under capitalism, because post-labor cannot coexist in a world still predicated on wage-labor. We would completely need to rethink what an economy even is. 18th & 19th century economic models would need to become obsolete. But capitalism isn't going to voluntarily abolish itself. Wealthy businessmen like being wealthy. They like the power that owning the means of production gives them over the working class. As far as they're concerned, that's their private property and they will do with it as they see fit, and God help anyone who tries to tell them otherwise. If the rest of us have to suffer so they can continue to amass more wealth, well, that's just the cost of doing business.

I would come to terms with it if it didn't mean the future was gonna suck harder than I thought it would.

How will companies even stay in business when nobody has employment to afford anything? How will we have fruits and vegetables when our farmland is taken up by data centers? How will we have WATER when all of it goes to data centers?

You want us to come to terms with a future that's unlivable for any of us? Then go ahead, and tell future generations that humanity is useless because that's just how the future will be. Oh wait, you can't, because we'll starve before we can ever have new generations of humans.

If there are any feasible realistic ways AI can do GOOD for the world, like stopping forest fires, reducing garbage, or lower ocean temperatures to what they should be, then prove it.

Mr Explosion and fellow lover of nature, are you using a home based internet that would presumably be running through a data center?

Or do you have some sort of home based server that is doing the dirty work instead of some big bad data center?

The internet worked perfectly fine before the explosion of AI data centers.
The internet worked perfectly fine before streaming everything.
The internet worked perfectly fine before smart phones.

Modern smart phones are causing brain rot. You shouldn't be on Tik Tok any moment of the day. Doom scrolling is not what we need.
Streaming is just a less efficient way of content delivery (but more efficient way of distribution) Home based PVRs worked perfectly fine with the old coax cable, sat tv and ota delivery.
AI will sooner control information flow rather than guarantee freedom of information.

So we could just go back to the data centers we had around 2010, just more efficient versions 16 years later, and people would become a lot healthier!

Not to mention have quieter communities, lower electric bills and more drinking water.

Why isn't anyone working on ways to make AI data centers smaller, quieter and less reliant on liquid cooling or more energy efficient?

And if we move data centers to space, there may not be an atmosphere to release the heat into, but couldn't they have built in coolant circulation up there? The plan may need rockets to work, but at least they wouldn't take up space on Earth.

Now we have an even further argument against AI and data centers. Elon should be executed as a warm criminal.

A thought provoking piece on companies' over reliance on AI.

As much as I hate that orange thing, it's restrictions towards Anthropic should be a wake up call for businesses that over rely on AI. It really is easier to just use human employees.

I made a cool dashboard with AI today. That felt nice and was fun. Glad I didn't have to spend so much time coding it line by line.
