Next gen can launch as soon as:
A - Next gen launch hardware can cost $499 or lower.
B - The price can remain the same or gets reduced over time.

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PRO  -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.

I keep saying it, but I'll say it again.
Next gen needs to be cheap, don't aim high with it, go low and cheap.

Cheap. With the same power as current gen. But make 60 fps mandatory with all console builds of games.

For the PS6, I think Sony should make a hybrid console that is around the power of the PS5 (or maybe a little weaker).  Require all major games to get a 100% physical release on cart.  Keep the price as low as possible.

They would eat Nintendo's lunch.

It's saddening to see that there's some that are still holding out hope that somehow things are gonna go back to the way things were. Reality will unfortunately be forcibly set in within the next several years. This is what capitalism does. Once a single thing becomes a norm, the domino effect takes hold, and there's no going back.

Yeah it's cool and all to talk about "XXXXX would dominate if they did this, this, and this" but that's all that is. Fun talk. Nothing about that kind of reasoning is the reality anymore.

Games would be a $100 on it if they required 100% physical.  The games Nintendo makes are usually pretty easy to get under 20 gigs.  A lot of developers including Sony struggle to keep them under 80 GB these days.  100+ GB Micro SD cards are going to cost a lot just for the card.

I voted that he's right, but it's complex.
Switch 2 could have stood to come out November 2023 or at least by November 2024. I know the Nintendo audience isn't about specs, but Switch has been outdated and not fresh since at least then.
Xbox feels like they need to get their fifth console out 2027 or before because of the state of their current gen.
The success of PS5 and the length of game development makes me think we can wait until 2029 for PS6.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 122 million (was 105 million, then 115 million) Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

I would hope we would get a more refined generation if it's the last one. One that doesn't focus on BS like RT but one that focuses on refining what is already there and adding detail and performance over fidelity. For me after jaggies were eliminated I could care less about graphics but if everything just got to the level of Death Stranding 2 with the PS6 and stayed there and devs worked on differentiating games with style that would be excellent.

Completely agree.
It feels likes this gen offered nothing thus far.

With the state of Physical media, the Switch 2/Xbox series X/Playstation 5 is likely my last console generation anyway.

If I am forced to go digital... I might as well stick with PC where the games are cheaper.

The next generation should be a bigger leap than what we got with the move from Xbox One > Xbox Series/Playstation 4 > Playstation 5.
* A.I upscaling.
* A.I Frame generation.
* Neural Texturing.
* Mega Geometry.
* Neural Materials.
* Neural Radiance Cache.
* Neural Texture Compression.

And more should be a big enabler.

I have been this way for a while now. I actually stopped gaming for a few years while in Uni, and now I just steam game. Pretty much everything is on steam except for a few exclusives and Nintendo games. And now with steam deck everything can be portable to some extent. Most laptops and desktops can play most of what's on steam.

5 years into the Xbox 360 and Xbox One life cycles I had about 200~ physical games.
Xbox Series? I have about 40.

I bought all the big hitters on Switch on the day of release... This time? The only 3rd party game I have bought is Cyberpunk because everything else isn't on cart.

Playstation 5 is fairing a little better, I am at about 80 physical games, but that's down from the several hundred I had on previous consoles.

I am actually spending less overall, because publishers don't care about physical media, so I don't care about buying them.

Still excited for next gen, but I'll be strictly PC I think for both my handheld and fixed devices, I have over 30 years worth of games I can draw from and bring forwards.

So much of the AI stuff you mentioned is inferior to having it done by hand. A.I. frame generation is having the AI draw imaginary frames where none previously existed. So it's not authentic to the written code. Neural texturing just sounds like a fancy word for having AI do the texturing which is an extremely difficult process and requires an artist's touch. Unless they have worked out the exact mathematical formula for unwrapping I don't see AI doing as well as a human. And if they have then is it really AI? Or just a better computer program?

As for the rest they just sound like the AI version of what they are. And I have the same objections.

If they go all-in on using AI to make games then I'm out. The art and originality will disappear.

Yeah, this gen feels like it barely started.
