We return to Scandinavia with Norway! I wasn’t too keen on doing this already, but some of you guys really wanted it. Norway is not exactly a mastodon in the industry, even less so than Italy. They had 2-3 titles that really had an impact, including a game that is often considered quintessential for its genre. Besides those, there is just not much to pick from. But maybe you know way more than me and I missed a bunch of underrated gems. I tried to dig deep and find some of them, so I am still quite happy will the poll options. The big Norwegian developer is Funcom, which has even managed to become a medium-sized publisher, with studios in other countries.

Some notable Norwegian developers and their games:

Funcom

By far the most important of the bunch. Has had most success with MMORPGs such as the Age of Conan series, but also point-and-click Adventure games, of which their game, The Longest Journey is often considered one of the greatest in the genre; probably the most popular one not developed by Lucas Arts, the sequel certainly also has its share of fans. Now they are working on a huge project in Dune: Awakening, will be interesting to see how that lands!

Notable games:

The Longest Journey

Anarchy Online

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey

Age of Conan: Unchained

Age of Conan: Rise of the Godslayer

The Secret World

Conan Exiles

Red Thread Games

Must be mentioned, since they have taken over the Dreamfall/Longest Journey franchise from Funcom and have continued the tradition with other games. None of their titles have gotten universal acclaim though.

Notable games:

Dreamfall Chapters

Draugen

Dustborn

D-Pad Studio

Indie studio, behind the very beloved Owlboy, a 2D platform adventure game, that got universal acclaim. It is not their only hit either. Their previous games, Savant – Ascent is a cult favorite.

Notable games:

Savant – Ascent

Owlboy

Rain Games

This Bergen based indie developer got their breakthrough hit with the 2013 2D puzzle-platformer game Teslagrad, which has a lot of unique mechanics. Unfortunately, the sequel did not receive the same level of acclaim.

Notable game:

Teslagrad

Teslagrad 2

Other games to consider

SNØ: Ultimate Freeriding

Mosaic

Sunlight

Fishing: North Atlantic

Crab Game

Crossfire (1992)

Sega Extreme Sports

Project I.G.I.

Milkmaid of the Milky Way

My Child Lebensborn

Skald: Against the Black Priory

Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley

...I don't think I've ever played any of these games or any others I know to be Norwegian. There's many games listed here that I already own or am otherwise interested in, but there's always something more interesting that prevents me from getting into any of these.

Yeah, I figured that a lot of people may not have played any of these games. The only one I played was My Child Lebensborn, which I got a bit tired of fast. That being said, I have long been wanting to play The Longest Journey. Owlboy and Teslagrad intrigue me as well.

I havent played any of these, so Daze Before Christmas it is

The Longest Journey is my moms favorite game ever though.

This one is easy pick for me, The Longest Journey is one of the best P&C adventure games ever made.
Dreamfall, its sequel was very good, but IMO not as good, and (shame on me) I still haven't got around Dreamfall Chapters.

Another one that is sitting patiently in backlog is CRPG inspired by Ultima games from 80s, Skald: Against the Black Priory.

Daze before Christmas; I still fire it up on my SNES for old times sake most Decembers. Fun and charming little game.

Winter Gold also deserves a mention for being a technically impressive SNES title from the same dev. (Funcom)

I enjoyed owlboy the most but I've only played it and Sega extreme sports.

I've owned The Longest Journey for probably way over 10 years now, but evidently it's hard to find time for it. That's probably the game I'm most interested in, among the ones mentioned here so far.

Gotta give it to Teslagrad, enjoyed it quite a bit on WiiU, which led me to purchase the sequel on Switch. Unfortunately, that version doesn't perform well, so I'll need to revisit it on Switch 2.

Edit: Other Norwegian indies I've heard of are Earthlock, Manuel Samuel, Pode, Shadow Puppeteer and Snufkin.

I really tried to like Owl Boy, it's one of the games I gave so many attempts of pulling it from my backlog and even pulling it bavk out from the depths of my library once it fell in the void but nope, despite that game seemingly looking so good there is something fundamentally wrong with it that I can't put my finger on what exactly it is.
