Forums - Gaming - Should subscription games allow you to buy DLC? Loosing access on game expiry

On PS Extra/Gamepass, DLC & in game transactions should...

Be allowed for purchase. 1 33.33%

Be blocked for purchase 0 0%

Allowed & remain accessible 2 66.67%

DLC should be made standalone if for sale 0 0%

I have no opinion 0 0%

Game pass/PS Extra games DLC can't be played once purchased but the game exits rotation on the service. Should this be allowed?

I guess I played Tales of Arise on PS Extra and without thinking much of it I bought  Beyond the Dawn, the games Expansion but after booting it I thought I'd rather wait, play it later and let it refresh my love for the game to maybe return and grind for the platinum. Well, turns out now I have to buy the game to play Beyond the Dawn which I paid 30 euro for.

I won't be making this mistake again and I have no idea how this is legal, frankly. It's feels very illegal, like a class actions waiting to happen. I'm surprised here in the EU we haven't gotten around to sticking an army of legal people up Sonys arse hole.

Just another reason I prefer yo own my games, even if they are digital. I'm may drop this service entirely. It's a disaster, I can't believe MS was allowed to stake Xbox on something Luke this that does not work for gaming. Imagine being at hour 90 of a 100 hour RPG and you are faced with the full cost of the game. 🤦‍♂️I was gonna get around to a few games on here and when I have felt the desire, I find they have price tags again, like Animal well for 25 euro, either it stays on subscription or there's really no point. It's SUCH a flawed service.

Maybe this is a PS+ issue or an issue with that specific game, but you can buy and use DLC for Game Pass titles. You even get a 10% discount for any Game and DLC on Game Pass. There is also Perks for Game Pass Ultimate which is essentially free content like skins and whatever.

And what happens when the game leaves the service...you loose access to the DLC content you paid for. This is my point. It feels illegal.

Gotcha. For me at least, it seems pretty straight forward you can't play a game you only own the DLC for. DLC is extra content, not access to the full game. This is why I don't buy DLC for Games I don't own.

Should it be allowed though. 🤔 Or should there be consumer protection implemented where devs are forced to allow the base game to be used as a launcher, base game unplayable or only allow DLC that is stand alone to be bought.

Should there be some avenue for the consumer to access by law.

You can buy DLC for PS Plus games and play it. Not sure why it didn't work tho. I did it for Destroy All Humans 2. After I finished it I went and bought the physical.

Yeah, you basically own PS plus monthly games for all intents and purposes but PS Extra games have a price tag once they expire, the file is on your SSD but you are shit out of luck and any in game purchases you made are now behind a, sometimes hefty price tag.

Pretty easy, don't buy DLC of games you don't own. But if you liked it well enough on your test trial while renting, and had to get the DLC for it... then purchase the title license later on when it goes out of said service.

I haven't bought much DLC since the 8th gen, and don't think that is going to change this time around. If the base game is what the developers thought was enough, then so be it, not going to be nickle and dimed.

You say tomato, I say tomato

If you have to subscribe to a game, then the DLC should also be a part of the subscription.

As a general rule, I do not buy DLC unless it's a game that I really really really like and will play to death.
...Or it's a chunky piece of DLC equivalent to an "expansion pack" of old.

No. Buyer beware. What you did was like buying new tires for a car you rented and then getting mad that you can't use the tires after you returned the car.

Maybe a warning could pop up letting you know that you won't be able to access the DLC unless you outright purchase the game once it is removed might be helpful.
