Forums - Gaming - I want a Meta Quest, but...

What should I do?

Buy the Meta Quest 3s at the end of the year 1 20.00%

Wait for the Meta Quest 4 4 80.00%

Hi guys. It's me again.

Well, I promised myself that after upgrading my PC (Did it last year), I wouldn't buy another console. But VR is different. I want a Virtual Reality experience, but PC VR is heckin' expensive. So I thought about getting a Meta Quest 3s. It's cheaper, standalone, and I could play games like Batman Arkham Shadow and others. If I can save some cash, I can get one at the end of the year.

However... I was doing some research and I found out that there's a big chance that Meta Quest 4 will release next year. And it will probably come with an affordable model. So... What if I get the 3s at the end of this year and a better version comes out one year later?

In other words, should I go for the Meta Quest 3s in 2025, or wait a bit longer and get the affordable version of the Meta Quest 4? If I get the 3s and it's true that a better model will come in 2026, I will not be able to upgrade for some time (probably).

What would you do?

Wait.

I'd wait especially if there's a chance that a cheaper and newer model coming out.

Wait if you can - Quest 3S has same SoC as Quest 3, but same lenses and display as Quest 2. This is by no means bad and you will enjoy both Quest 3S in standaloine and connected to PC for PC VR, but Quest 3 has 30% more total pixels, over 50% more pixels per inch and 20% more pixels per degree, as well as ~15% better horizontal field of view. I'm expecting Quest 4S to have same SoC as Quest 4, but with lenses and display as Quest 3.

Though, full Quest 4 will probably have eye tracking, and 4S probably still won't.

If you already have a PS5, see if you can catch PSVR2 on sale.

There's tons to play on it with the caveat no porn or other 3D videos, nor applications. Just games.

PSVR2 can give you the same experience as a 4080 PCVR setup thanks to eye tracked dynamic foveated rendering, actually better since PC doesn't support HDR. However a lot of games don't use DFR on PSVR2, nor HDR. (Mostly Quest ports, better resolution like TWD S&S, but no DFR nor HDR) Those that do look awesome though, RE8, RE4, GT7, CotM, NMS, Hitman (no HDR). As well as many smaller games. Plus the OLED screens give much better color.

Quest if you must have something standalone, can't stand a cable, want mixed reality games or use it for anything else than games. You can of course get the PC adapter for PSVR2, but Quest has better clarity for text related tasks.

I already have well over 50 hours in Hitman, can't get enough of it. Partying in Berlin last night:

Windows 10 Pro

Intel Core i5 3570

Nvidia Geforce RTX 3050

12 GB RAM

I suppose if I would go for PCVR I would have to upgrade again, specially my CPU. Also, requirements for those games keep going up, so that's why a standalone experience would be better for me. And the fact that a VR device for PC is much more expensive than a Quest.

Yeah, I considered PSVR2 before. But I don't have a PS5, and my PC is not the best machine for those kind of experiences. Also, it would be good to have a VR Device for other things besides gaming.

I think I'm going with the Quest, just not sure yet if I will wait for Quest 4 or get a 3s later this year. But your answers are helping me a lot already.

OMG, thank you so much for this video! I like it a lot!

So, it seems like there's quite a difference from Quest 3s to Quest 3. But the Quest 3s is already a nice improvement over Quest 2.

Maybe waiting for the next-gen devices I can get a Quest 4s with the original Quest 3 quality and a reasonable price (I like techs, but I'm a budget guy and those things are very expensive around here).

Ah, yeah PS5 + PSVR2 is too much, better to upgrade your PC instead. And then indeed better to go for a standalone Quest.

As for waiting, Quest 4 is still at least a year away. If you find Quest 3s on sale it's probably your best bet. The lower resolution with the full power of Quest 3 will at least give you good performance.

No telling now what Quest 4 / 4s is going to cost with tarifs and what not. (How much longer will Meta bleed around a Billion a month for VR...)
Quest 3s is currently CAD 400 here (128gb version with Batman), PSVR2 CAD 550, Quest 3 CAD 680 (512 GB). 3s is less than Switch 2 anyway (CAD 630)

If the thing goes on sale I'll be very tempted to snatch one up.

As I don't care about VR, I use that money to buy games instead.
