Got it on my wishlist. Might buy it on Steam first unless the PS5 version goes on sale for a lower price point. |
It had a slight sale but I suspect we won't see a majour sale until after the PC release so you won't get the amazing Platinum unfortunately which is game enhancing, not so much that it'll make the difference of a score point but its a shame not to do it. Where ever you play it, I highly recommend staying on normal difficulty no matter how difficult the bosses may seem at first, they do not get actually difficult until the last three and never drop it down cause the game is a flow state like game and much of the fun relies on it heavily. Unless you've never played a game like this before and Easy giv3s you that feeling without the need for normal difficulty.

Well the only action/hack and slash games I've played are God of War (except God of War 2018 and Ragnarok), Devil May Cry (except for DMC5) and Bayonetta (except Bayonetta 3).
I'm planning to get into Ninja Gaiden since I have all of the games on my Xbox and since they are planning to make a 4th one.
But ya, I'm planning to play Nier (Xbox 360), Nier remaster (PC) and Nier Automata (Switch) in the future too.
I'll be sure to get Stellar Blade.
We did like a whole thread series about this a little over a year ago so I mostly just went back and copied my answers.
For the record I think the best years were 2017 and 2020, they both have multiple games that would have made GOTY in most other years (Breath of the Wild, Odyssey, OMORI, Will of the Wisps).

Damn, Ninja gaiden was hardcore back even when the controls and camera angle were in fashion, honestly I would not recommend that to be your entry into the more difficult side of the genre, they are tougher and more punishing than Soulsborne games.
Neir Automata is perfect but I wouldn't put it in the same boat as it's genre bending and the core action side of the combat really takes a back seat to what else is on offer like bullet hell design and mixing up genres, it's actually very mid, as is some other things like side questing and what not but I'd highly recommend, that game is a masterpiece with an absolute mind blowing story that'll get you thinking like a philosopher it has such deep themes and cuts emotionally like few other works of any media with an OST that feels like it was found alongside an artifact of the Gods and despite what I said about combat the gameplay is super fun as a package.
Stellar Blade is like Neir Automata if you ripped out all of what I said was good and succeeded in making the poor parts as fun as humanly possible.

Woot! 1979. Incredible! I love the evolution of the list here, not just the games but how your tastes have remained the same for 32 years but subetly changed subgenres. You found Final Fantasy and it changed your gaming life and props to still loving both that and Zelda after all their iterations and formula changes.

Nice one. Why not revive it cause this topic is so fucking cool. Great list btw and yet Doki Doki won out on a stacked year, fantastic.
Well, let me think. These are all based on their European release dates for the last 20 years.
2005: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
2006: Shadow of the Colossus
2007: Okami
2008: Valkyria Chronicles
2009: Persona 4
2010: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
2011: Dark Souls
2012: Journey
2013: The Last of Us
2014:The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
2015: Bloodborne/ The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC
2016: Dark Souls III
2017: Horizon Zero Dawn
2018: Shadow of the Colossus Remake (or if that one doesn't count since it's a remake, Valkyria Chronicles 4)
2019: The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III
2020: The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV
2021: Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights (took me forever to find a game I had actually played from 2021)
2022: Elden Ring
2023: Theathrythm Final Bar Line
2024: Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth
I'm low-key surprised at the number of people who liked the same games that I did, especially some of the lower-profile titles I liked.
Some years were kind of tough to pick a winner. In 2019, I loved Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and that would have been by GOTY if it hadn't been for Dragon Quest XI S being such a perfect distillation of everything I love about DQ. In 2023, Baldur's Gate 3 was definitely a strong contender, but I enjoyed and played Zelda more. I would probably have given the nod to Fire Emblem Engage if it hadn't been for Zelda and BG3, though. I know Engage wasn't everybody's cup of tea, but I really enjoyed it. 2024 also had Unicorn Overlord and Tekken 8 for my consideration.
