Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Footage emerges of cancelled Wii build of Star Wars Battlefront III

https://nintendoeverything.com/footage-emerges-of-cancelled-star-wars-battlefront-3-on-wii/

The following footage was just unearthed by a group called Free Radical Archives (not associated with the company itself) and show a work in progress build of Star Wars Battlefront III for Wii. Apparently this build is from just prior to the project's cancellation in 2008.

Looks really good for a Wii game, granted it also looks like it's running at a HD resolution and a high frame rate that wouldn't have been possible on the final Wii build. Also playable Jar-Jar! lol.

Gosh, now I have to wonder about it, why the cancellation in the end anyway ? The game seemed to be in a pretty advance stage of production and it was for one of the hottest console at the time ...

Yeah it looks like they're running this on Dolphin; the original game would've been 480p of course.

Those flat areas and low-res textures. That looks PS2 lol

It's an unfinished build, as the game was ultimately canned. Probably some of it is placeholder assets.

IIRC, LucasArts got new management, which became skeptical of the devs after their game Haze flopped on PS3. The development of Haze and general transition to HD consoles was more expensive than Free Radical expected. LucasArts employees have claimed that Free Radical was missing deadlines, while FR veterans claim that LucasArts was months late in payment.

We were robbed. I've long known many of the details of this game, and there has been some previous footage, but nothing on this scale.
12-year-old me would've lost my mind having a new Battlefront game and playable on Wii. We didn't have a PS2 in the house, we had to go over to our grandparent's house to play the Battlefront games.
I haven't played the portable-only Battlefronts, but I've heard I'm not missing much. III probably would've been great. Instead, the IP peaked with II in 2005 and didn't come close to that quality again until around 2018 when Battlefront II (EA) was more or less fixed.
EA seems to have learned the lesson of this Battlefront III by not investing in a third until they're very sure they want to see it through. If EA is still granted the rights years from now, I could maybe see a III that acts as a soft reboot. That or some other publishers and devs reboot it again.
