Have You Ever Suddenly Lost All Interest in an Anticipated Title for No Good Reason?

Like, you think it looks great, it reviews well, can't wait to play it, but for some reason as soon as it releases you suddenly lose all desire to play it without even trying it first? Perhaps you even bought it at launch only for it to collect dust in your library for years until you get around to it (IF you get around to it)?

Am I the only weird person this has happened to (multiple times)? It's almost like the anticipation was more fun than the idea of actually playing it... What game was it for you?

For me it's death stranding. I still haven't opened the box to install the game yet lol

Yeah. Dragon Age Dreadwolf after they rebranded it to Dragon Age Veilgaurd. I just don't like the font and design of the title image, I just know from the look of it the game isn't for me.

Yep. Mostly games that are announced way too early. I move on.

Breath of the Wild was an exception. Suikoden remakes and Dragon Quest 3 will be the other exceptions.

Publishers who announce things too early are assholes 😀

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I know that feeling, but in another context. I don't know the correct term, but I am pretty sure it is that one feeling young children have when they fight over a toy, but once they have it, they don't play with it.

I don't mean this in bad faith. I am certain there is a reason for this.

Sounds a bit like FOMO.

FOMO is fear of missing out which means you have almost 100% chance of buying something day 1 because everyone else is buying it - so its not that.

@OT - Cant say I ever recall such a thing.

Every game I anticipated/got excited for , I got it and enjoyed it - i.e. Final Fantasy XV, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Pokemon games, Smash.

I guess closest to that would be Super Mario Sunshine which I hated it but ended up enjoying it after a few years later and doing 2-3 more playthroughs of it.

There are many Sonic games which I feel this way about. Sonic Origins, Sonic Superstars, Sonic Forces….all looked pretty interesting during reveal, though grew very disappointing as launch approached.

I had more hype for the game, before they started showing gameplay ect for it.
I'm not sure if this counts as "for no good reason".

Stuff like top surgery scars, being marketed as a reason to play the game.... and how ugly all the characters look in it.

Yeah this is "not for me", and it really takes you out of the fantasy world, once they start doing that stuff.
You imagine in a world with magic, theres a spell that just outright turns you into a women if you want to be one, and vice versa.
There would be some comic relife attached to it, usally and that would be it.

That’s probably a major factor. Over-hyping of games way too far in advance. Good marketing at the time, but allows reality to sink in and filters out that impulsive drive.

That’s often how I feel. Many video games I buy on impulse. There’s the budget, the money, and it’s fun to be impulsive when it comes to entertainment. But allowing yourself time to dwell on it allows the time for scrutiny, and to convince yourself you don’t need the product… then be impulsive and fun in another direction (buying a different game).
