I really can't see a world where the PS5 price increase in Japan will pay off. Sales are less than half what they were before and the software has always been where the profit is at anyways. I'm sure they're hoping it will stabilize back to what it was before when there's a little more distance to the price hike but I'm having a hard time seeing it.

i feel like the industry is starting to shift in such a way so as to prioritize selling hardware at a profitable margin over software. With ballooning development costs, it's no longer a safe gamble to pump out a game and expect profits: R&C:RA is an example of a game which never broke even despite selling nearly five million (appearently this game made good profits), FFVIIReBirth sold throguh 3mil in its first week yet still disappointed SquEnix, Concord generated virtually no revenue and stabbed an aggressive (speculated) $300mil into Sony's wallet.

The way Sony is likely looking at these figures is in the long-term. Eventually, consumers will "get over it" and become desensitized to the aggressive price tag. Sure, it's not looking good for the moment, but by the time PS6 releases at a price tag of $700(DE)/$800(StndrdE), consumers will have already gotten used to it.

Don't forget they basicly make free money of games sold on the platform made by other developers. They might be worried about their own games not being profitable enough (which I think is silly because it's that worry causing them to downprioritize traditional games in favor of mega failures like Concord), but being a platform holder should always be very profitable to them overall.

300k sounds a bit too much even with PC included. Elden Ring did 50% of its sales digital+PC+Xbox, and by that time PS5 was strongly supply constrained

I think 210-230k is more realistic?

PC is rapidly growing in Japan. If memory serves me right, overall spending on 3rd party PC software/content in Japan last year was much higher than Switch and Playstation.

With that said, we don't have enough data on digital sales and how much of the money spent is going to services and microtransactions. So your estimate may be more accurate.

Would be interesting to see because the latest I saw was  'PC software revenue in Japan is 50% of the console software revenue in Japan'   It was used as proof that Switch/mobile and now PC must be have higher software revenue in Japan than PS.

That price hike really did a number on PS5. Top 3 games, all new releases, and yet hardware doesn't budge an inch.

Oh, but it did move - down!

PS5 is sitting resiliently at 10-15k/week. Doesn’t matter if Metaphor, Dragon Ball, nor Silent Hill release with strong figures. Price hike is rlly hurting Sony’s momentum in Japan. Happy to see Metaphor doing so good, nonetheless. :) Zelda’s holding strong. Astro is still nowhere in sight…

It got 3 rather big releases and yet sales went down WoW to just 11k. I'm not sure it can hold the 10k the next couple weeks with this.

Damn Wizardry did rather poorly. Really sad to see for the game that massively influenced JRPGs. Wizardry was absolutely huge in the 80's in Japan, and now it can't even break the 10k sales on any platform.
