Forums - Gaming Discussion - Can graphics keep evolving? How? For how long?

The most impressed I have been with graphics in the last decade is still this:

Still waiting for an actual game to look this good.

Yea nothing comes close to that. This is suppose to be one of the technically most impressive games cause of PT and RT, but judging off the video i would rather have better framerates or image quality all day. consoles would have to sacrifice too much unfortunatly to make RT or PT worth it.

This is too much. It takes all style out the equation, apart from the character models. It makes sense for things like racing games but no way am I playing a 60 hour RPG with graphics like this. It crossed the boundary of wowness and into to the point of boring visuals. Click 4k on this if you have it. Nonsense level of realism.

Naw i would love a game that looked like that, a game that looked like real life and open world would be a mind blowing experiance. this is still far away from real life though.

Tell me this doesn't look engrossing.

Well that's only achieving the realism look cause of the body cam style, I seen this game in free cam dev mode and it's not nearly as impressive but nah, I gotta say that looks like a headache and boring as fuck visually. The sound design is excellent though, they really nailed it to the point of realism, it's so inpactful. Alas, If GTA were that realistic I'd be considering not going driving the speed limit, stealthing missions, not looking at anyone incase I start fight and have to blow someones very meticulously detailed brains out.

Yes, and they *will* continue to evolve. For how long? Until the day Jesus' opens the gates of Heaven, and the angels from above start to descend and ascend from him.

That's every Saturday night at the local gay bar named Heaven. Jesus is the owner and all the men are dubbed angels. So are you saying graphics will only evolve until 8 PM tonight?

Yes. And unfortunately, Saturday was yesterday. Therefore, graphics will cease to evolve. :(

We already hit the point of photo realism, and there is more important visual aspects going forward. Such as visual effects, more importantly the amount of it , so the cpu is going to be much more advanced to handle so much on screen. Mesh shading will also be a game changer in this regard. Also as important the amount of object on screen and the draw distance, massive scale with so much on screen calculations.

I'm still waiting for that game where we get invaded by Aliens from space. Where you look up to the skies and you see millions of ufo's descending from the clouds, all highly detailed . Imagine being in awe from seeing things. We are probably a good 10/15 years away from cpu and gpu technologies doing the unimaginable/

Tech rolls hard and fast. I'm replaying FF7 Remake and while it looks good it is already showing its age. Graphics, imo, haven't slowed down.

Kratos is right, it is all the impressive special effects that have improved. Keeping with 7 remake, the lighting and shadows are pretty outdated compared to newer games and UE5 is just going to push things further.

No we haven't. The bridge from where we are now to photo realism while a small jump is one that seems very hard to cross. Yeah, you can get a somewhat photo real screen shot but show my a video that looks indistinguishable from real life. Hollywood CGI can't even do it, you can always tell once things are moving.

I've already played games that my mind percieved as being real. Where i literally forgot i was playing a game and i took it as something real. A good example was experiencing death stranding. To me that was as real as it could get, where i felt i was there. Now you can keep improving visuals , but nothing can make me feel any greater than what i experienced. If i already felt like it was real life, you can't convince the brain any further.  Other games that did it were moments in tlou2, games like returnal.

That's why i say we need other things to make games greater going forward, such as massive scale leap and detail, draw distances, amound of objects per frame, visual effects fidelity like lighting and shadows, material quality, whether liquid , solid and gas. Animation and physics taking up a notch. This is what wil make visuals greater.

Oh, I know the trick of the mind your talking about, I got it back in the day with Uncharted 2's night scenes and RDR1. But if your looking with a critical eye, we aren't at photo Real.

And yes, I totally agree. Effects and stuff on screen is what they should be chasing like with Ghost of Tsushima.
