Switch vs DS Sales Comparison - November 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. DS Global:

Gap change in latest month: 986,207 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 468,718 - DS

Total Lead: 13,209,974 - DS

Switch Total Sales: 132,912,906

DS Total Sales: 146,122,880

November 2023 is the 81st month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 0.99 million units when compared to the DS during the same timeframe.

In the last 12 months, the DS has outsold the Switch by 0.47 million units. The DS is ahead of the Switch by 13.21 million units.

The 81st month on sale for the Nintendo Switch is November 2023, while for the DS it is July 2011. The Switch has sold 132.91 million units, while the DS sold 146.12 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo DS sold 154.02 million units lifetime. The Nintendo Switch is currently 21.11 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

But I'm not sure. Usually a new console comes 6-7 years after it's predecessor, so 2026 wouldn't be a bad guess, but I still think Microsoft could wait until 2028, like that leak said.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 3.61 million units. The PS4 is currently ahead of the PS5 by 150,514 units.

The PS5 has sold 48.93 million units in 37 months, while the PS4 sold 49.08 million units. Month 37 for the PS5 is November 2023 and for the PS4 is November 2016.

The way things are looking, XS will be lucky if it sells half as much lifetime.

That's unrealistically pessimistic. While things are looking rough it's gonna be close to 27m by now so reaching 43m in the next few years is still guaranteed. Falling short of 50m will be on the table though depending on how this year goes.

I mean I hope so cos I think the industry is better off when it's more competitive, but XS's YOY drops recently in only its third year have been brutal, it really seems like the wheels are falling off.
