Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo x Sony Announce Deal For live action "Legend of Zelda" feature film

Odd. With all the borrowing Zelda does from studio Ghibli movies, it would have made sense to make an animated movie, done by Hayao Miyazaki. Even though he retired 3 times already, no doubt he would still be up for another last final movie :)

Can you imagine? A Miyazaki-directed Zelda movie? I could just leave the theater and die on the spot, since I had reached the peak of human experience :D

Anywoo, I was all in for an animated movie and now we got this ... And usually, most Sony movie live action production s are middling at best.

I know you said "most", but the fact they made the first two Tobey Spider movies (even the third has better values than most of the MCU crap) put them on very high regard in my personal book.

INB4 someone says that "the spideys are now all part of the MCU, huehuehuehue, blehhhrrghhh, I'm thirty and live in my parents basement".

Honestly, having just recently rewatched the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies for the first time since childhood, I thought only the second one was worth a damn. The other two were riddled with major issues and shortcomings. Even then, their merits have nothing to do with Sony as a company. Also, if I recall correctly, Avi Arad was mostly responsible for turning Spider-Man 3 into the mess that it was, because he cancelled Raimi's planned Spider-Man 4 in favor of a reboot that we all know was largely crap (even though Andrew Garfield is the best live-action Peter Parker we've had).

The only truly great Spider-Man movies are called Spider-Verse.

Avi Arad of Marvel/Spider-Man fame will produce, Mr. Miyamoto will be at the helm, like the Mario movie. The writer is the guy who wrote Jurassic World and Great Detective Pikachu, the director is the guy who did the Maze Runner movies and is doing the new Planet of the Apes film, which is said to look really good.

This is already looking like the most mediocre movie of all time

My thoughts too.

I really was hoping for a Japanese animated film. There are quite a few studios I had in mind that seemed like the perfect fit.

I just don't think Zelda will translate well into live action... Plus the names attached do not instill any confidence.

I will still be seeing it though, as Zelda is my favourite franchise.

But after the rumors that 'something Zelda not related to Tears of the Kingdom will be announced this year', I had my hopes up. I just want Wind Waker and Twilight Princess HD on Switch lol.

Sounds like a bad idea but I thought so ever since they started talking about a potential Zelda film years and years ago.

Yes! This is great. If this movie ends up great it'll make Nintendo into a cinema powerhouse in the way an animated movie just couldn't do. A Zelda movie had to be live action, animated would have been very disappointing for Zelda. So this is great news, and especially great they are already working on it. I thought maybe they'd do a DK animated movie as a spinoff from the Mario movie first, and we wouldn't see Zelda live action until like end of the decade, but hopefully this means we'll get this in like 2026/27.

Mario movie's incredible success opened the gates for Nintendo, but a badass high fantasy live action Zelda movie (think: LotR) would cement Nintendo's place as a media powerhouse beyond just games. Just gotta hope they don't go in a kiddy cheesy direction or do something stupid like don't have Link talk because he doesn't talk in the games lol. Hopefully they take this seriously as a high fantasy movie targeted at teens/20s/30s year olds but that kids will enjoy too. If this turns out great I'd love to see a Zelda trilogy over the next decade.

Hell, with how integral Princess Zelda has become in the franchise over the years as an actual character and not just a princess to be saved, if this goes well I could see a Zelda spin-off tv show or at least single season limited series with the Zelda actress, like how Marvel and Star Wars have spun off into various shows.

Why

Scene prediction:

Princess Zelda: "Please, Link... The destiny of Hyrule is in your hands."
Sidekick Rito general: "Alright people, we're moving out"
Sidekick Goron loving explosions: "Let's lock and load, baby!" fires a cannon at a bunch of Moblins
"Witty" sidekick Zora: "Now that's what I call a Link to the past!"

Definitely was no expecting that.

Don't like live action adaptations, so heh.

Good thing I can tell them who is perfect to cast.

Zelda

Link

Ganondorf

Impa

King

Every additional character. This list I have been pouring over for hours and hours. Carefully made selection.

*clears throat*

Danny Devito. For all of them.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

I've dreaded an announcement like this.
I don't feel like The Legend of Zelda lends itself to film. Link is one of the poster boys of silent protagonists. If he speaks a decent amount in a film or stays more or less silent, I don't feel like either is convincing. Video games and film are very different mediums.

I'm also dreading a celebrity cast. They had one for a computer-animated film like Super Mario Bros., I don't see why they would cast almost entirely lesser-known actors in a live-action Zelda film.
