Forums - Nintendo - Switch 2 third party support - What should it be like?

I want both unique Switch experiences like Astral Chain, Triangle Strategy and Shin Megami Tensei V AND multiplatforms.

AC is a first party game.

Developed by a third party studio. It still follows my point of "those are the kind of third party games I want on Switch".

I'm a person that plays mostly on the go due to spending a lot of time in public transportation. I don't have time to sit my ass in front of a TV and play for hours.

So... All kinds of games coming to Switch 2 would be very appreciated. I don't care if graphics and framerate are not as good as on PC or home consoles. As long as it's a good port and it's still a great game on Switch (like Persona 5, DOOM, Nier Automata, Dragon Quest XI S or Alien Isolation) I'm all for it ^^

Platinum made Astral Chain but Nintendo own the IP

I know, and it doesn't change my point

If its like right now but with a few more titles that match the PS5/Xbox's third party support, I'll be eatin good.

the switch had terrible third party support I hope the switch 2 improves a lot. where are all the call of duty, battlefield, assassins creed, alan wake 2, elden ring, farcry, cyberpunk 2077, gta 5.

That's a funny way to say Wii U, lol. I. All seriousness, the Switch still does look kinda lame if you primarily/exclusively use it as a home console.

But if you primarily see it as the latest Nintendo handheld ala Game Boy Advance or Nintendo DS, then it's some of the best third party support on a Nintendo platform yet.

Switch opened with light to modest third-party support due to 3DS not coming close to DS and Wii U failing. Bethesda was on-board to get a port of Skyrim out in 2017 (but that was originally a 7th gen game), but many devs and publishers were concerned about if Switch would sell.
Third-party devs have made "impossible" ports on Switch due to the success of Switch and because Switch is easier to develop games for than a lot of previous Nintendo hardware. Wii U was on-paper mostly better in specs than Xbox 360 and PS3. But its unfriendly architecture and GamePad scared away most developers. The vast majority of mainstream 3rd-party games in its library were in the first year because they were ports and ones that weren't were still selected because Wii U's writing wasn't on the wall at launch.
All of this to say, Switch 2 should have a strong third-party line up at the start, even if it is a lot of ports. I wouldn't put it past Square Enix to make a deal with Nintendo and get Final Fantasy VII Remake on there. Red Dead Redemption 2 is probably something Rockstar has discussed with Nintendo, and I could see it happening.
If the spec rumors of Switch 2 are true, the gap (in execution) for Switch 2 and the current consoles should be less than Switch and the Xbox One and PS4. Obviously, Switch 2 will be utterly annihilated in specs by the future PS6 and Xbox 5.

I will say that I think any Japanese third party is basically shooting themsleves in the foot by shunning Switch/Switch 2 at this point. A lot of them still target PlayStation only for the home market despite Nintendo outselling them 3:1 or even 4:1.

So when series like Final Fantasy, Persona, Kingdom Hearts, Like a Dragon, etc, inevitably don't come to Switch 2 I think they're missing a lot of potential sales.

The weird thing is that the argument used to be that PlayStation would result in bigger Western sales, but ofc Nintendo have been selling better than PS in the West too recently. Also, Switch owners clearly like Japanese games too (whereas PS userbase has many who don't), so focusing on Nintendo seems like a better bet to sell in the West too imo

??? Japanese support has been really good on Switch. With the exception of the latest AAA games, most Japanese developers and publishers basically gave everything they had to Switch. Sega, Square Enix, Marvelous, NIS, Koei Tecmo, Bandai Namco, and Konami have all given the Switch plenty of excellent games, some of the best games on the system mind you.

I guess you can say Capcom would be the weakest given their focus on AAA console development, but even then, they brought Monster Hunter and much of their backlog over.

The thing to remember though, is that most Japanese devs support the Switch like it's a new Nintendo handheld, not a main home console like PlayStation or Xbox. So most games they bring to it are going to be either Switch exclusives, older games, or AA multiplatform titles created with the Switch in mind from the start. I imagine Switch 2 won't be much different in that regard.

I think Switch 2 should maintain the same course as Switch. Rely mostly on Nintendo’s first-party content, supplemented with great “A”, or indie, support, and really solid “AA” support, particularly from Japanese publishers.

Publishers of new “AAA” games shouldn’t deploy a lot of resources making Switch 2 ports, and Nintendo should absolutely not spend time and money trying to develop a platform to entice them.

We'll see something interesting over the next several years, when Call of Duty comes back to Nintendo. If it sells well, you can count on tons of third party AAA games making their way to the Nintendo system. If it doesn't, you can count on the current level of support, meaning very little AAA, continuing.

Assuming it sells well it will automatically see better third party support since it's much easier to get a PS5 game to run on PS4-level hardware than it was for PS4 games and PS3-level hardware. Games are also just made more scaleable today with customizable performance options and since mostly all of them are planned to come to PC at some point.
