I hear it's pretty woke in places, so I *wish* it was more like the nineties on that score at least.

Ehh, these descriptions in political angles is misguided for this game, but these days the political camp see politics in everything. Therefore the game is woke, as it gives you full options for romance and sexual identity, it's just freedom of player choice in everything. On the other hand this game is accused of racism and misogyny, just for depicting racism and misogyny exist in the world, including this fantasy world. In reality the game takes no real political stance. You can play whatever way you want. If you want to murder all tieflings for how they look you can. If you want a homosexual relationship you can have that as well. So if the game is woke or conservative is just a question of player choices.

Okay, that might be the case. Each side finds their own gripes with the game. I know about the bear sex thing, so that kind of sounded like the modern agenda of normalizing extreme sexual behavior, but maybe it makes more sense in the context of the game. I also heard there is a companion that originally required you to either start a gay relationship with him, or be a total jerk to him, there was no third option. I think that was patched later, but a strange thing nonetheless.

To have a gay relationship with him means you have to choose the same sex anyways. You are also free in choosing your sex.

True, but if you were the same sex and heterosexual, originally you were put in a weird position where you would have to twist your own sexuality to appease that character. Doesn't sound very wholesome to me.

It's just a role play man, it's not deep. You don't have to date this character if you don't want and even if you choose to date you're not twisting your sexuality either. It's like when you're a playing a game with a straight female lead, sometimes the main character have a love interest

This is such a non issue to be annoyed tbh

For me, it is deep. I get immersed. And I always play an idealized version of myself, which means my character is a heterosexual male. I'm not annoyed, it's more like an eyebrow raising thing, like is this what the world has come to. And it would be a shame if I had to give the boot to a companion just because I don't roll his way sexually. Just dumb, and even ethically a bit questionable. So I'm glad they patched it so that I can be just friends with him and I can keep him in the team.

You are friend with everyone in real life? If that companion doesn't fit, then kick them.

Sure, but it has to be for the right reason. And I don't want to miss out on possible side quests that come with that companion :)

Console 3D games may have been shit back then, but that is entirely not true on the PC side of things.

Tomb Raider, Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Resident Evil 1-3, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7-9, Goleneye 007 and the list goes on.

I disagree.

Tomb Raider and the Resident Evil games were multiplat releases, and they were more complete on PC, too (Expansion packs for Tomb Raider and uncensored editions for Resident Evil).

But I'll agree on the other games - though only on a mechanical standpoint, as their 3D graphics were shit even back then when not looked through very rose-tinted glasses (which goes for all 3D games in the 90's).

Playing for some time now and yeah... GOTY

Great level of interactive with NPCs, good story, rich and tactical combat system, very interesting world building. Extremely rich and interactive questlines. It throws you many ways to do problem-solving. Feels like as good as any board RPG can be if turned into video game

It's not a game for everyone. Thr number of combat options and the factnyou can easily screw your playtrough making poor choices make this a overwhelming game. I believe BG3 is just as hard-core as game can be. Larian deserves all awards for having the guts to make a game like that while being an independent studio

One year later...

Just finished my seventh playtrough and I'm still perplexed with how many new iterations of the same events I'm able to get every single playtrough

The combat never gets tiring, nor the companions personal quests. The screenplay of this game is a spit in the face for all "gameplay first" purists, perfect example of how integrate story and dialogue with actual gameplay

A game like that being developed by an independent studio is a truly one in lifetime experience. I don't think I will ever get over Baldurs Gate 3, it's a game far superior to anything else left in the industry and doesn't look like a game to be surpassed anytime soon. It simply have a perfect core mechanics and world (borrowed from original tabletop), an experienced dev who managed to craft CRPGs combat system and pure talent to artists creating good characters and intricate epic story
