Time for a new batch of hints:

40) Perhaps one of the most famous cases of a "bug" becoming a feature

39) This highly acclaimed title was caught in some controversy this year

38) As below, so above

37) The revival of revivals

36) Most characters from the original game return in this sequel, though you only meet a few of them before the post game

39 - Bayonetta 3?

38 - Uncharted 4?

Bofferbrauer2 guessed my #40 right on time. #38 and #36 will get a new hint, and I'll add #35.

40 - In a live-action cutscene, your instructor in one level, as you fly one of the enemy's craft, casually refers to your enemies as "Bucketheads".
Hint 2: You'll also have to "follow his lead and do what [he] say".
Hint 3: It is strange though, training rookie pilots by letting them fly enemy fighters at high speeds through extremely narrow chasms. Doesn't seem safe. But this is important, because (in the story anyway), you'll need the knowledge for the capture of the enemy's experimental cloaked fighters that have been wreaking havoc. Guessed by Bofferbrauer2 - Star Wars Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire

38 - The single-player mode of this game, the base game anyway, features campaigns for five of the six civilisations, though a mini-level of the sixth can be played as an easter-egg in one of the levels of one of the other campaigns after you find it by revealing the map through a cheat-code.
Hint 2: There are still six campaigns anyway, but the first, which is a tutorial, and the last campaign both feature the same hairy civilisation.
Hint 3: While a high profile franchise, this game still is basically just a reskin of another, well-known but unrelated game

36 - While still great, the expansion for this game tainted the balance somewhat, because the new civilisation could use certain powers multiple times while the original three can only use every power once.
Hint 2: The expansion did add the eponymous unit from this expansion's name though, to the original three civilisations. Guessed by UnderwaterFunktown - Age of Mythology

35 - The final boss is a dictator in a mech suit. In the Original anyway, it gets pretty complicated. Guessed by Mnementh - Wolfenstein 3D

Nope, both wrong unfortunately.

Yes, was an easy one I'd say.

Also correct! The Titans expansion was great, but I always found it a bit of a bummer that some of the Norse, Greek or Egyptian God powers didn't also get three uses. Didn't stop me though from still picking the Egyptians and picking the gods in such a way that I ended up with two Pharaohs, one of which the awesome Son of Osiris.

#41 Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
guessed by Veknoid_Outcast
platform Switch/Stadia
release year 2016
developer/publisher Nihon Falcom/NIS America
genre action RPG
links Wikipedia
past years 2021: #37, 2020: #43, 2019: #45, 2018: #47

Ys is a longrunning RPG-series with the hero Adol Christin as the main character. In this entry his ship wrecks on a mysterious island. As he explores the island he find other passengers of the ship, helps building a shelter, fend off monster attacks and so on. It is a very satisfying mix of actions.

The story is set in the universe of the Ys series, but brings the characters to an island which no one ever left. It is filled with monsters of all sorts, including Primordials which were believed to be extinct. Exploring the island and reaching the regions you saw before from afar is very satisfying.

The fighting system is diverse and each character brings on their own set of moves, which helps to keep fighting fresh. The game also offers decent challenges.

The real fun is to explore more and more of the island and on the way uncover more of a twisted plot. At some point we have even to solve a crime and play detective.

Another element are the recurring monster attacks which can be played for points as waves of monsters attack your base.

I played it on Switch, which probably doesn't offer the best graphical fidelity of all versions, but still it was a very nice looking game. I replayed it later on Stadia and got a more visually refined version.

If you like action JRPGs, you should give this game a try.

#40: Guessed by S.Peelman: Majora's Mask

#39: Guessed by Bofferbrauer2: Phoenix Point

#38: Help the kingdom of Nostria.
Play either as Elisa, Aivar or Katharine.
These are the Paladin, Fighter and Magician of the game (in that order).

#37: After a god was killed a few years ago, it happens that childs are born without a soul which are called hollowborn.
Some mages try to put animal souls in the kids. What could possibly go wrong?
The developer by now is bought by Microsoft.

#36: Guessed by S.Peelman: Resident Evil: Revelations
