Forums - Gaming - Discussion Thread – The 13th Annual Greatest Games Event

No takers so far, but the upcoming games have to be guessed, so more hints:

#10: Guessed by drbunnig: Star Wars: Dark Forces

#9: Guessed by Darashiva: Okami

#8: The remake of the first game with the engine of the fourth and an added story mode.
This game let's build you a party consisting of different classes to tackle the labyrinth.

#7: As you complete the quests for the people, the tavern gets more and more empty, as these task was often the last thing that kept these people in Duhan.
The game is in a classic RPG series that started in the west, but this game and others are japanese entries.

#6: Once you completed the story and therefore no finished task triggers it automatically, you can ask for the high five.
The story has three main chapters on their separate islands, but the stuff happening between the chapters is often even more interesting.

#5: Guessed by S.Peelman: Tokyo Mirage Session ♯FE
The story-part has to do with entertainment and the fighting part involves your characters singing, dancing or acting to win the the fight, while an audience cheers the fighters.
This is a mash-up of two series with very different RPG mechanics from different companies.

#4: Guessed by UnderwaterFunktown: Heroes of Might and Magic III
The campaign tasks you with the Restoration of Erathia.
You have to build up your cities to fill up your armies in this third game in the series.

Final 10:

#10
- The two books you find caused a bit of confusion when this game was first released.
- If you fail to save your comrades, the shadow of the final boss will loom large after the credits
- To save one comrade, you must make the right decisions at certain times. To save the other, you need to find three of a certain item to access where they are.

#9
- Unlike the preceding game, being a little sloppy will no longer see you take a tumble, although your points haul will suffer. This is only true of the game when originally released, however.

#8 - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
- You find cows in some pretty strange places.

#7
- You can give the game an autumnal theme if you conquer the most challenging stages.

#6
- Local wildlife numbers are likely to drop when the protagonist arrives on location.

#5
- I’m pretty sure one of every living creature is involved with getting 100% in this game.

#4
- The postman has done well to get that far through the gauntlet.

#3
It’s easy to miss that fiery foe in the desert.

#2
- By the end of the second level, you’ll have faced more human foes than you had in the entirety of the previous game.

#1
- Vehicles you can command include a car, a helicopter, a train, and a submarine.

My list so far

#4 - Death Stranding?

#1 - Wild guess of Grand Theft Auto V.

No to both.

Exactly. Tokyo Mirage Sessions is short TMS, which is SMT (Shin Megami Tensei) turned around.

Dark Forces is a first person shooter based on the foundation Doom layed, and it is a really good one. It has some technological advancements in the engine like looking up and down and some fog effects. It has also a much more consistent world as other shooters of the time, basically because it is based on the already established Star Wars universe. The level design is great, the mission briefing is made well with actors voicing their roles. This is a pretty good shooter.

As this is placed in the Star Wars universe the game is made by LucasArts. I have some games from them on my list, but mostly point-and-click adventures. This is the shooter from them I really like. The game clearly steps into the mold that Doom layed out for shooters, but advances it in so many ways. With the mission setup with clear goals and the actors you get a pretty good story for a shooter, something that wasn't that common back then.

You are playing Kyle Katarn who works as a mercenary for the rebels. And you are tasked with finding out more about the new Dark Trooper project of the Imperials. In the missions you find more out about it and then go on to stop it.

The game shows memorable locations and has pretty good events layed out in the missions. Another point keeping you on you're toes is, that you can only save between missions, but got multiple lifes. So no save scumming.

Star Wars: Dark Forces runs well in Dosbox if you have an old copy. Or you can buy it from GOG, where it is currently on sale. I recently learned of a new modded engine to run the Jedi-engine games Dark Forces and Outlaws: The Force Engine. Maybe a good way to give the game another go with higher resolution.

Still no guesses, so here's a new hint for both games.

#3

-For 32 years, the path to earth has been lost

-The Shivans return

-You're a pilot in the Galactic Terran-Vasudan Alliance, which was formed following the Great War

-The story ends on a cliffhanger that has never been resolved as no continuation has ever been developed

-These days, the developer is better known for a series of open world games that began as a GTA clone, but became much more satirical and silly as it went on

#2

-10,000 years after the war that freed humanity

-The main character has spent the previous five years searching for the monster that killed his parents and destroyed his village

-He returns to his new home village at the start of the game after those five years, only to find it destroyed and his childhood friend taken captive

-Dragons play a significant role in the story

-Sony's Final Fantasy "killer" from the PS1 days

My biggest gainer on the list. A game I had previously played in my teenage years but didn't quite grasp the complexities of at the time. Finally, after a friend's convincing, I went back to this game and played through the Pacifist & even the Genocide ending this year and it completely changed my view on the game. The proficiency I've always gotten, a masterpiece in reinventing traditional rpg combat with a wonderfully realized fight & act system that creates such an interesting view on morality. All the thematic elements I missed initially finally set in this time though. It's a mind-bending game about your character's choices and the choices of those around you and those from the past, and how they've effected the current situation you're presented. The character roster while seemingly goofy gags are all dynamic developed and each portray a different way they've coped with their struggles over the year. Topping all that off with maybe the most brilliant soundtrack to a game I've ever heard, and this is a new memory I will never forget. If the memes and otherwise often annoying internet culture ever deterred you from this game, I implore you to give it a shot now, it really is worth it.

6Castlevania: Symphony of the night (PS1) Previous No. 6 = same-1997

This is my favorite genre, unfortunately I feel that after this game nothing reaches its level.

There have been many metroidvania type games but I feel that this is my only love, there is no room for others even though they are good.

I don't even know why I like it so much although I can mention all its technical and playable elements that are excellent for me.

5God of war 2018 (PS4)Previous No. 5 = same-2018

Oh boy! How to start describing this game...
I always really like stories with family dynamics, but I didn't think they would be able to do them in a game but less in a game like God of War.

The whole story flows through cinematics, gameplay and boss fights.

Everything is so well cared for, a complete experience.

4Okami (PS2) Previous No. 4 = same-2006

First of all it is very sad to see how this game is not more popular than it should be.

A game that is inspired by the greatest with a better overall result. An adventure full of Japanese folklore that includes art, music, history, etc of the highest level.

I fell in love with the culture and characters, especially from Amaterasu and issun who embark on this journey that represents the values of the culture that we have always seen.
