Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

That quote is always taken out of context, Sony never ruled out "select M&A," most people just focused on the words organic growth lol.

I am guessing the speculation about them wanting Bungie to work on converting Sony games to live service has to be absolutely correct, otherwise it seems like a huge waste of money. Especially considering that Bungie has come out and vehemently communicated that they are still independent and will remain multiplatform. Either way it's further confirmation that the industry is heading towards software as a service and less about hardware and exclusives.

A few things I took away from the interview:

1) all Bungie games will be multiplatform. Looks like Sony sees this as an easy money maker by adding this studio and immediately getting one of the biggest GaaS games out there and increasing their own brand awareness as it's now a Sony studio.

2) of future COD games become exclusive, Sony will still have their own FPS from Bungie to counter players leaving.

3) shared expertise across studios of they want to make another exclusive FPS they can tap into Bungie.

4) Bungie waves to expand beyond gaming and this matches Sony's road map with PS Studios expanding into movies and series.

5) with auditions of Crunchyroll and Funimation, the option to create Anime is also there.

A big guess here, Sony will partner with Netflix and crush Gamepass by tapping into Netflix's subscriber base.

Sony has a really good relationship with Netflix as they have chosen not to create their sub service, but also made deals with Netflix with Spidey movies. I can see Sony taking this further. There is no better and easier way to get a leg up on Gamepass than to release PSNow on Netflix as an extra tier.

They will take the money and let netflix handle the rest. Unlike Gamepass, this won't be an extra app, so it will be easier to implement and this way they can skip some red tape.

Finally, my last hot take, Sony will use this as MS used the cross gen arguement last gen. Everyone who has been around long enough knows Sony was good with this in the 369 gen and MS didn't want to play ball, but there media and MS made it out like this never happened by the end of next gen.

Although MS started the play anywhere, Sony has joined later, but will keep on this. They are doing this with Bungie and now MLB The Show too, but when they announce the Netflix deal, today will be a huge blow to MS and cause a shit storm when MS hold key IPs like COD, Elder Scrolls and Fallout away from other platforms.

This deal make perfect sense since Destiny can stay multiplatform but join whatever PlayStation Spartacus subscription service. Just like Call of Duty can stay multiplatform but will be on Xbox Game Pass. It will be interesting to see if this a closed deal like Minecraft where that franchise had to stay multiplatform.

It's pretty obvious that Sony is also going to be making their own FPS IPs or bring back old IP like Killzone.

Their games will be multiplatform going forward, as long as Bungie wants them to be. It's very Pro consumer that Sony would be ok making this sort of deal: they aren't gating out existing fans of Bungie.

I agree that Spartacus will be leveraged, perhaps even exclusive content.

That said, Sony going back to FPS has been known for a while now. This definitively continues to solidify that move.

Sony doesn't make these pro consumer deal (Insoniac, Bluepoint, Housemarque) like this; it really show how much power Bungie had in the negotiation to remain multiplatform. Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard at a 12% premium (worth 61.55 Billion on January 2022 bought for 68.7 Billion). While, Sony just bought Bungie for 90% premium (Worth 2 Billion on January 2022 and bought for 3.8 Billion).

This shows that Sony did not buy just Destiny, there a major component in this deal that will benefit all the other studios that was missing from Sony worth a 90% premium.

I think Sony realize that the future of gaming is moving away from consoles as streaming services and subscription services start taking over. Sony producing exclusive content is the future and this deal is really going to pay out for them in the future.  Destiny franchise is now a money makers for Sony and whatever other IP comes out of this acquisition for decades to come.

LOL at people saying Sony couldn't make purchases. If they can buy Bungie for 3.6b, they can definitely go for SE for 7b.

Apparently there was some gaming business article recently saying SNY was 2 trillion in debt vs MS only being 10s of billions in debt.

Problem was that 2 trillion was in Japanese currency and those 10 of billions were in American currency.

If converted to American currency, SNY has far less debt than MS.

Damage control before SNY struck back I'd guess.

This doesn't seem like a particular good deal.
Microsoft got Bethesda for $7.5 billion, it came with the IPs:
The Elder Scrolls
Fallout
Dishonored
The Evil Within
DOOM
Wolfenstein
Quake

And of cause any new IP Bethesda would come up with (Starfield, Deathloop).

Sony got Bungie for a little less than half of that, that only came with Destiny...

Destiny is raking in cash every day from its live service much like GTA online/Apex legends/Warzone.

Does Dishonored/Doom/Evil within/Wolfenstein bring that?

Plus you think they will never make any new or other IP?

Bungie registered and trademarked "Matter" a few years back now. There was good reason to believe it was new IP.

Can't remember if they officially said if it was or not though. Bungie was talking about expanding then, as Destiny was faltering, and while they were working on getting away from Activision.

I think its inevitable Sony will purchase a publisher. We even got Shinobi hinting at Sony buying Capcom lol.

In the Variety interview, the CEO of Sony stated they were buyers not sellers, and will be shopping for IP. There's no other entertainment sector where they can get IP outside of gaming. The real question is, who has a large back catalog of IP that can be adapted into film or television, that also have popular live service titles? I think Capcom and Ubisoft fit the bill.

No! This would be a terrible nightmare. Stop repeating this, don't give them stupid ideas. Also no Square Enix, no Sega and no Ubisoft, either. Also no Platinum Games to Nintendo, either. One-trick ponys like Bungie are fine in my eyes, but big names in the industry that diversify and enrich the gaming landscape are not okay and should stay independent forever.

For the record, I'm not okay with MS buing Acti/Blizzard, either.

The move here is genius. It's almost too perfect. It's as if SNY knew Activision was going to be acquired by MS/XB.

Here's just a small visual appetizer.

Think of the casual gaming audience. Think of (long time) XB fans. Think of (long time) Activision fans.

What's it say on the bottom of the box? Same as the title screens at the start of these games?..

'SNY is screwed' they were saying. 'MS will just outbid them no matter who they try to acquire', they said.

Well now...

SNY buys one of the biggest, best known studios, who left MS, and Acti, and would rather join PS instead of go back apparently.

Hmm...

$3.6B may seem high, but not only is SNY buying a name here, they're acquiring XB's and Acti's once prized possession. Their golden goose.

Not only that, but MS's $70B purchase just got silenced by a $4B purchase. If that isn't strategy at it's finest, I don't what is.

Not to mention Bungie is making plenty of money, and should have "Matter" on the way at some point besides just Destiny.

I wonder how long this stays on GP if SNY isn't doing their own version? Even if they are, what sort of benefits do Spartacus subs get over GP subs?

I wonder whether or not COD will go exclusive or remain multiplatform going forward, along with any other past multiplatform franchises?

I figured SNY would do something, but Bungie wasn't on my radar as they made it clear they wanted to be independent, or so they said.

Well, better sleep tight then, the nightmare is coming lol.

It's only a matter of time before gaming is consolidated into 5 - 6 major players. It sucks, but Sony can't stop it, Nintendo can't either, but they can lock up certain publishers/IP, in order to maintain their market position. Why wouldn't they?

I do have my own reservations about gaming turning into a subscription landscape, especially with how most subscription services lock content on them without the option to buy it on other platforms, but it is what it is at this point.

Not to be condescending but is Bungie even relevant in this day and age?

I mean I understand their history, but are any of the driving creative forces still within the company?

They don't have the rights to "the" IP (Halo) that put Bungie on the main stream map.
