Forums - Gaming - Open world games where you DONT fast travel?

There comes a point in any game that I will start using FT eventually. You will be going through the same spaces time and again. It would be tedious to have to travel just for the sake of traveling. Sometimes I will have so much to do that I don't want to trigger anything new in the world before I've had a chance to finish some things. Then it's time to go out and explore again.

I want to throw in a short Hike. It is a small open world, but more importantly at every point is something interesting to discover. Even though it is a small scale open world, I think everyone journey to the peak is different.

Probably just because I'm playing it atm. Saints Row IV. You can run like that flash so manually going there is fast travel. Literally.

As for not wanting to use it because traversal is so good. Xenoblade X. Why fast travel when I can hop in a flying mech.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

The Isle (Evrima Branch), very open, no fast travel

Death Stranding is a bit of cheating here, because it doesn't really make fast travel very convenient. I also can't think of any really fitting examples, but I've got to mention newer Assassin's Creed games: They made me doubt fast travel when I was travelling relatively short distances because fast travel can take a while in those games (in the form of loading, of course). In practice, I chose to walk/ride distances I would have fast travelled in games where fast travel is quicker. I think Final Fantasy XV was similar in this regard. I don't play a lot of open world games, so it's possible this kind of thing is very common these days in open world games, but to me, it's not so maybe it's worth mentioning.

Halo Infinite, because the grapple hook is just too fun to use.

Fallout 3, New Vegas, and 4, because of the random encounters and things you find in the open world. A lot of the random throwaway stuff in random Fallout 4 areas are written better than most actual games.

BotW I fast traveled once maybe twice, and then I realized it was cooler discovering new things along my journey back than it is turning in the quest. BotW is the embodiment of "it's the journey, not the destination"

Not using fast travel in BotW made me plan how to go about the game, exploring one area at a time. It creates a mental image of the game world in your mind much faster and more detailed than when hopping about on the map using fast travel.

The downside is, the growing "to do list" of stuff you need to travel for. Which was actually an upside in Death stranding where I turned into a logistics planner, using the hubs as ware houses, storing stuff with different destinations. It turned a bit into The Settlers for me, where I was the one carrying stuff from hub to hub, combining shipments as efficiently as possible. That game was more like Transport Tycoon for me. Full trucks from hub to hub, then gear up for local deliveries / pick ups by zip line or floating carriers where trucks can't go.
