Forums - Sales Discussion - Famitsu sales: Week 50, 2021 - (6th Dec - 12th Dec)

Come to think of it, do you think Sony's apparent new policy of disregarding Japan is tied to some of their other activities of recent years? You know, like how Sony has generally released less smaller games since the PS3 era ended, how Japan studio was effectively closed down, the fact that Sony's acquired been acquiring Western dtudios like Insomniac and Bluepoint, how their censorship policies have been adjusted since 2016 or so, etc.

I'd argue that the PS4 didn't benefit THAT much from Japanese games, but looking back, I don't think so. We don't have as much data as we did a few years ago, but games like Final Fantasy XV, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Kingdom Hearts 3, Monster Hunter World, Resident Evil 7, Gran Turismo Sport, and Street Fighter V are all likely 5+ million sellers on PS4 alone.

Can anyone think of anything like this happening before, where a major player in hardware simply abandoned one of their best markets? The closest I can think of is Sega F8ing themselves over in the mid-90'sa with their massive divide between their Japanese and American divisions, but that's not really the same thing.

Love and tolerate.

Year 2050, the same handful of users still cannot understand Japan likes mobile gaming, something the rest of the world realised 10 years ago.

Nintendo has a handheld. Sony does not. Nintendo can have a handheld because they are not supporting the entire third party industry with their hardware, hence weak hardware is acceptable.

Playstation houses the majority sales of the entire gaming industry, who develop games for cutting edge hardware, using cutting edge game engines, using software devs and creators that like to push the medium to the edge.

Playstation is never going to give up the top specs throne, and it shouldn't because that's where the money and the future of gaming is at. Maybe when streaming is good enough, or Sony gets some very good mobile chips that allows all current games to be played it will do another Playstation portable, but until then Sony is not going to worry. The future is simple elsewhere and the entire gaming industry knows it.

Well, that's one way to say that Sony is toast in Japan.

If selling 9-10M and 50-70M software is toast then you've been having the wrong toast

PS4 sold more than Vita in Japan.

PS5 software sales in Japan is terrible.

Well, in the last Famitsu thread (or was it even the one before) you were insistent, that japanese 3rd-party devs don't need and don't care for japan as market. Now you concede to my point. I said: mana japanese devs refocus on PC, mobile or Switch. Right there I said mobile and now you also consider the importance of the mobile market for japan. Progress! You may still understand the japanese market. Thanks for joining my position on this.

I think it is funny if you say:

"Playstation houses the majority sales of the entire gaming industry"

What? But you go on:

"who develop games for cutting edge hardware, using cutting edge game engines, using software devs and creators that like to push the medium to the edge."

Oh, an asterisk. Although even with the Asterisk I am not sure, PC wants a word. But as we have no proper numbers from PC, this could go either way.

Anyways, making a statement like this is like saying:

"Xbox houses the majority sales of the entire gaming industry, who release on Gamepass."

"Switch houses the majority sales of the entire gaming industry, who develop for hybrids."

Well, duh.

"Playstation is never going to give up the top specs throne"

Firstly, the top specs throne in console gaming is owned by the Series X, not that it matters I think. But I also would never say never. You know, this top specs throne was owned by others at the time Sony was holding the weak, casual hardware throne with PS2 (anybody remembers the DanceDanceRevolution craze?). Times change. But yes, for now PS follows the high pixel and polygon route.

Thanks. With how much ended the 2020 list? How much more to the 8.6 million are needed to match that?

Thanks!

So, 2021 sales already topped 2020 sales. That is good. Mostly with Monster Hunter alone. And Momotaro nearly reached last years number, probably will get there until the end of the year. Incredible!

So 3rd-party sales in japan can be solid, if companies do it right.

If selling 9-10M and 50-70M software is toast then you've been having the wrong toast

That was a generation ago, but we have been discussing the present and you then wanted to draw attention to the future. The PS5 isn't going to match PS4 numbers. The extraordinary circumstances this generation have boosted PS5 hardware sales to make them look respectable, but software sales have been underwhelming and are telling the true story.

The software totals of third party games that noshten has posted prove this further. While in 2020 Nintendo had a market share of ~54% of third party software sales, it has risen to ~81% in 2021. Much of the PS4's software share is going to be replaced by Switch rather than the PS5, the writing is already on the wall for that.

And the thing that really dooms PS sales to growing irrelevance in Japan is the attitude towards the Japanese market from SIE's HQ in the USA.

The true story cannot be told until sony is actually able to meet demand globally, anything else is speculation. Retailers report high demand, whereas you'll assume low because of trend. There isn't really an objective discussion to be had here.
